2023 MLB All-Star Game odds, trends: Bettors with slight lean on American League for 10th straight win, heavy prop action on Shohei Ohtani

The American League looks for its 10th straight victory in the All-Star Game.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game is tonight at T-Mobile Park in Seattle – the third time the city's hosted the Midsummer Classic – with the American League on a nine-game winning streak over the National League, the second-longest winning streak of all-time in the game's history. The "home" AL side is a short favorite and taking a small lean at BetMGM, but the major betting story is all the props action being wagered on Angels star Shohei Ohtani. Click here for expert picks.

With the AL down from -125 to -115 on the money line, the Junior Circuit is taking 50% of the bets and 56% of the money. The AL has an overall record of 47-43-2 in the All-Star Game and hasn't lost since an 8-0 defeat in Kansas City in 2012. The 2020 game was canceled because of the pandemic. On the total of 7.5 runs, 73% of the bets and 50% of the money are on the Over despite the Under being 14-4 in All-Star Games since 2005. The National League has scored more than three runs in the ASG just once during this nine-game skid.

Ohtani is the starting designated hitter for the American League -- potentially his final ASG as an American League player, if rumors of his interest in signing with the Dodgers this offseason are true -- and batting second after leading off in 2022. He is not expected to pitch due to a recurring blister problem. Ohtani to hit the game's first homer at +700 is the most-wagered prop tonight, followed by Ohtani with the game's first hit at +1100 and that his first plate appearance results in an extra-base hit at +600. The other options on that prop are walk/HBP (+575), strikeout (+230), single (+600) and other (+145).

Ohtani has a single and a walk in four career All-Star Game plate appearances and is the +500 favorite for game MVP. Not all sportsbooks will offer MVP odds because the fan vote is part of it. Atlanta's Ronald Acuña Jr., the NL leadoff hitter, is the +700 second favorite for game MVP.

Arizona's Zac Gallen (11-3, 3.04 ERA) will be the pitcher Ohtani faces in the bottom of the first, and Ohtani is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against Gallen in the regular season. It's the first All-Star appearance for Gallen.

The Yankees' Gerrit Cole (9-2, 2.85) makes his sixth ASG appearance and first start on the mound for the AL. That Cole's first pitch is a strike is -150. A ball is +160 and the pitch being put in play is +800.

The NL is managed by the Phillies' Rob Thomson and the AL by the Astros' Dusty Baker. That the American League wins by one run is the +400 favorite for winning margin. The over/under for total homers in the game is 3.5 and total strikeouts is 22.5.

The AL and NL have split the two previous All-Star Games in Seattle (1976 and 2001). This marks the third straight year in which the players are wearing an All-Star Game-specific uniform. It's only the second time since 2014 (Minnesota's Target Field) that an AL venue has hosted the All-Star Game. Next year's game is also at an AL venue, at Texas' Globe Life Field.
