I can't not take the Rays, as they're 13-0 this season. Drew Rasmussen has yet to allow a run and has only given up three hits in both of his starts thus far. On the other hand, Jose Berrios has really been struggling, as his opponents have scored six and eight runs in both of his outings. I don't think the Rays break their losing streak with this game. Take the road team.
As noted in the Rays' game pick, I think the Rays are going to jump all over what's left of Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios. They'll score plenty of runs. Drew Rasmussen, the Rays starter, is excellent and will have good success a time or two through the order. He's also only gone more than six innings four times in his career and the Rays had to use a lot of bullpen in the Red Sox series, especially after Taj Bradley's debut Wednesday and Jeffrey Springs' injury Thursday. Also, let's keep in mind the new dimensions at Rogers Centre, which are much more hitter friendly. The Rays are going to win this one AND it will be high scoring.
As I said yesterday in picking the Rays, it's time to just ride the wave. That means we'll lose one eventually, but we can enjoy the wins until that comes. Jose Berrios gets the ball for the Blue Jays and he led the AL in hits and earned runs allowed last season. He already has an 11.17 ERA this season and even the Royals torched him. The Rays got Berrios for 10 runs on 21 hits in 13 1/3 innings last year, too. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen has been lights out so far after a 2.84 ERA in 146 innings last year.
This bet on the Rays is loaded with stats backing up the play: 7.8 runs per game and allowing 2.3 runs per game, among them. But to me, the momentum of starting the season 13-0 is the reason I think they win tonight. The Blue Jays have won seven of their last nine but will start Jose Berrios, who has lost his last two starts badly (14 runs allowed after allowing batters to hit more than .300 in the spring). Drew Rasmussen hasn't allowed a run in two starts so far. Rays to win.
