As the saying goes, "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it." The Astros have seen each of their last six games go Over. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have scored a total of 25 runs in the first three games of this series and averaged more than seven in the playoffs. I don’t think Houston RHP Zack Greinke is going to be able to handle Boston's red-hot lineup. Plus, the Astros should be facing a lot of right-handed pitching, which they have been crushing of late. Take this game to go Over the total.
Nick Pivetta was solid in his first two career postseason appearances in the ALDS and he pitched a quality start against Houston the only time he faced them this season. Zack Greinke will be making his second postseason appearance this season after pitching 1 inning and allowing 2 hits in the ALDS. Greinke was hit hard for 4 ER in 3 IP in his only start against the Red Sox this season and he hasn’t had a successful outing since before his injury in August. Christian Javier should be the first out of the bullpen for the Astros and he has pitched really well this postseason, but he isn’t really stretched out to go more than 3 innings. The Red Sox will most likely go with Tanner Houck to piggyback Pivetta and he has also been very good, but the Red Sox also have a fresh bullpen after the blowout the past two games with the off day in between. Take the Red Sox at home.
The Astros starting pitchers' inability to get deep into games is costing them in a big way and that will continue. Astros starter Zack Greinke had an 11.74 ERA in his last four outings in the regular season. Since Sept. 19, he's had two outings, in which he threw 28 and 21 pitches, respectively. The Red Sox offense is on a historic tear, too. Even if Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta isn't as good as he was in the ALDS, the offense can win a slugfest.
Difficult to have any faith in Houston starter Zack Greinke as he wasn't good in his final three regular-season starts and not particularly good in his one inning in the ALDS vs. the White Sox. He's probably only available for 40 pitches and then followed by Cristian Javier. The Houston bullpen overall is in shambles because the team's starting pitchers have accounted for just 5.1 of the 26 innings pitched in this series. Boston's Nick Pivetta will be making his first career postseason start. He has appeared twice in relief so far in these playoffs, allowing three earned runs and striking out 11 batters in 8.2 innings. The way the Sox are killing the ball right now, simply can't go against them at home.
