Where does Tyrann Mathieu end up? Odds released on 2018 team
The Honey Badger will be roaming a different defensive backfield in 2018.
Pro Bowl cornerback Tyrann Mathieu was released by the Arizona Cardinals, just two seasons into a five-year, $62.5 million deal signed in 2016.
Mathieu would have been guaranteed for two more years and nearly $19 million had he been on Arizona's roster on Friday. He wasn't interested in a pay cut, so they let him go.
As teams wheel and deal and sign players in this free agency mania, Mathieu will become one of the more sought-after players on the market. He won't be on the market for long.
SPORTSLINE: WHERE DOES SUH END UP?
SportsLine's oddsmakers have set odds as to where Mathieu ends up.
Which team will Tyrann Mathieu play for in 2018?
New York Jets 4/1
San Francisco 49ers 6/1
Kansas City Chiefs 6/1
Green Bay Packers 7/1
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7/1
New York Giants 8/1
New Orleans Saints 8/1
Oakland Raiders 10/1
New England Patriots 10/1
Houston Texans 10/1
Pittsburgh Steelers 10/1
Carolina Panthers 12/1
Field 5/1
Mathieu, 25, has had torn ACLs in both knees, but when he plays he's considered upper-echelon against the pass and the run. He can play corner and safety, and has even lined up at linebacker. Most every team could find a spot for him on the field.
Five teams listed above will likely have great interest in Mathieu, but simply aren't in a position to make a competitive offer due to cap space issues: The Patriots, Giants, Panthers, Steelers and Saints.
SPORTSLINE: ODDS ON WHERE JORDY NELSON PLAYS IN 2018
The Packers and Buccaneers need help at corner and should at least reach out. The Giants stay in the mix due to Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher's connection with Mathieu as the former DC for the Cardinals.
PICK: The Jets have a more-personal connection. Prior to Bettcher, Todd Bowles was the DC in Arizona. He's now the head coach of the Jets. Mathieu also has a child with Bowles' stepdaughter.
On the field, the Jets were just 22nd against the pass according to Pro Football Focus. They have a young defensive backfield, let by 2017 rookies Jamal Adams (like Mathieu, a LSU grad) and Marcus Maye.
But while Adams ranked as the No. 6 safety in the NFL, per PFF, Maye ranked 80th out of 86.
The Jets have the cap space, have an opportunity to improve and have the strong personal connection. They're a best bet among many possible suitors. Take the green-and-white.
