It's a new era for the Washington Commanders. Daniel Snyder's tumultuous reign as owner is in the past, so now the attention can turn to improving the product on the field. The Commanders are coming off an 8-8-1 season that held more promise before an 0-3-1 stretch in December thwarted any playoff hopes. The franchise still has not won a playoff game since the 2005 season.
Coach Ron Rivera returns for his fourth season at the helm, but the coaching staff does have a significant change. Eric Bieniemy, who spent the last five seasons as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs, has taken over as the OC in Washington. He inherits a unit that ranked 24th in the league in points per game (18.9) and has a chance to show that Kansas City's offensive success over the last five years was not all Andy Reid's doing.
In addition to having a new man calling the plays, the Commanders will also have a new man running them. Gone are quarterbacks Carson Wentz, who was waived after going 2-5 as the starter, and Taylor Heinicke, who signed as a free agent with the Falcons. That leaves 2022 fifth round pick Sam Howell as the leading candidate to start. Howell played in only one game last season, throwing a touchdown and an interception in a season-ending victory over the Cowboys.
There are fewer questions on defense where Washington returns the significant pieces of a unit that ranked No. 1 in success rate allowed and No. 7 in scoring defense (20.2 points per game). That unit figures to be improved with the addition of the team's top two draft picks: first round cornerback Emmanuel Forbes and second round safety Jartavius Martin.
Unfortunately for the Commanders, they play in the loaded NFC East and are set to play the NFL's ninth-toughest schedule, according to Sharp Football Analysis. So while hope is on the horizon for Washington fans, the near future still poses many hurdles.
