UFC Fight Night: Will Johnson defend title for 10th straight time?

The UFC Fight Night card Saturday features venerable flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson seeking his 10th consecutive title defense when he takes on Wilson Reis. MMA expert Hugh Citron previews the card and offers his selections.

What: UFC Fight Night, Demetrious Johnson vs. Wilson Reis

    When: Saturday, 8 p.m. ET

    Where: Sprint Center, Kansas City

    TV: FOX

    Odd: Johnson -800, Reis +500

This Saturday, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson looks to defend his title for the 10th consecutive time against Wilson Reis in the main event from Kansas City.

Johnson, who along with Jon Jones are my top pound-for-pound fighters in MMA, is a prohibitive -800 favorite against the Brazilian Reis, who gets +500 as the underdog.

Johnson hasn't lost a fight since 2011, and has rarely been tested, even though he had to survive a takedown and submission attempt in his last fight in December against Tim Elliott.

Johnson, who early in his career relied on his great wrestling and unmatched cardio, has really developed into an all-around mixed-martial artist. He has few shortcomings.

Still, Johnson would prefer a fight that stays in close range, where his takedown threat must always be respected.

Reis comes into Saturday winning five of his last six fights, but getting only two stoppages. This is significant because I find it hard to see Reis winning a five-round decision over the relentless Johnson.

The flyweights always produce action-packed fights and this should be no different.

Johnson should dominate the stand-up battle and won't fare poorly should the fight go to the ground.

Reis' best chance will be to catch Johnson in a submission on the ground, but that's easier said than done.

I will never recommend laying a big favorite in MMA fights. As I've said many times before, there are too many ways to win or lose a fight.

I'm picking Johnson to win, but it's a pass from a betting perspective.

Middleweights: Ronaldo Souza (-230) vs. Robert Whittaker (+190)

The Fight Night card also features a big fight in the middleweight division between Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Robert Whittaker.

Souza has won 10 of his last 11 fights, the loss being a controversial split decision against a real good middleweight in Yoel Romero.

Souza is a -230 favorite with Whittaker getting +190 as the underdog. Whittaker, 26, has some major upside out win over Derek Brunson last November, really caught my eye.

Souza is a great fighter but, at 37, have we already seen his best?

I've always preferred playing the young up-and-comer against the big-name veteran, especially when getting a lucrative price.

Big upsets in MMA are never easy to see coming, but the risk-reward ratio seems to really favor the underdog here.

    Pick: Whittaker (+190)

Record to date: 2-0 last week, 9-10 (-1.70 units) in 2017.
