Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more
Welcome to the Baker Mayfield era. Or the Kyle Trask era. Or the John Wolford era. One thing is for sure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season: It's no longer the Tom Brady era. The widely regarded Greatest of All Time has retired -- officially this time. All he did was lead the team in its the most successful run in franchise history, which included a 32-18 regular season record over the last three years, three playoff appearances, five postseason wins and a Super Bowl title in the 2020 season.Â
Brady's retirement leaves an enormous void. Even at the age of 45 last season, he set the NFL's single-season record for pass attempts (733) and pass completions (490). Mayfield, who signed as a free agent in the offseason, is the favorite to win the job, but he already is on his fourth team since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2018. He'll need to cut down on his interceptions (64 in his career versus 102 touchdown passes) in order to succeed at what may be his last shot to be a starter.
Whoever wins the job will have one of the best receivers in the NFL at his disposal. Receiver Mike Evans had his ninth consecutive season of 1,000-plus receiving yards last year, which is tied for the second-longest streak in NFL history.
New offensive coordinator Dave Canales will need to get more out of the running game. Last season the Buccaneers had fewer rushing yards as a team (1,308) than four players had by themselves. The team averaged 76.9 rushing yards a game, the second fewest of any playoff team in NFL history.
The defense, which last season ranked ninth in the league in yards per game (324.3), has the pieces to still be one of the best in the NFC, led by DT Vita Vea (6.5 sacks last season), LB Devin White (124 tackles) and LB Lavonte David (also 124 tackles). But there are questions about the depth in the secondary.
