SMU vs. Temple odds, line: Advanced computer college football model releases spread pick for Friday's AAC game

SportsLine's projection model has generated selections for the matchup between the Mustangs and Owls

Two teams at opposite ends of the American Athletic Conference standings collide when the SMU Mustangs and Temple Owls square off on Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The Mustangs (4-2 overall, 2-0 in AAC) enter the week in a four-way tie for first place in the conference, along with Tulane, Florida Atlantic and UTSA. Meanwhile the Owls (2-5, 0-3) sit at the bottom of the standings and are one of three teams still winless in conference play. Temple QB E.J. Warner (concussion) is questionable.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The Mustangs are 23.5-point favorites in the latest SMU vs. Temple odds, while the over/under for total points scored is 54.5. (See up-to-date odds for every game this week on our college football odds page.)

The model knows that the Mustangs have been playing excellent defense this season. The defense ranks in the top 20 in NCAA in defensive touchdowns (seventh, two), scoring defense (18th, 17.0 points per game), total defense (19th, 311.3 yards per game) and passing yards allowed (19th, 183.5 per game). In Week 2, SMU held Oklahoma's explosive offense to season lows in total yards (365), passing yards (176) and yards per play (4.9).

The model also knows that the Owls are coming off one of their best rushing games of the season. On Saturday at North Texas, Temple ran for 242 yards. That total is the second most in a game by the Owls this season, behind the team's 290-yard performance in Week 3 against Norfolk State.
