San Francisco 49ers 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more
The San Francisco 49ers have appeared in six NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls over the past 12 seasons but have yet to win their first championship since 1994. Last year, they dealt with season-ending injuries to their top two quarterbacks but still concluded the 2022 regular season with a 10-game winning streak and won their first two playoff contests. However, third-stringer Brock Purdy and No. 4 signal-caller Josh Johnson got hurt in the team's third trip to the conference title game in four campaigns and San Francisco's magical season came to an end in Philadelphia.
Purdy, who was the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, made the 49ers thankful they selected him with his performance as a rookie. The 23-year-old from Iowa State went 5-0 as a starter in the regular season and guided the team to playoff wins against Seattle and Dallas before tearing a ligament in his elbow early in the NFC Championship Game versus the Eagles. Purdy completed 65.1% of his pass attempts for 569 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the postseason after throwing for 1,374 yards with 13 TDs and only four picks in nine regular-season contests.
San Francisco will enter the campaign with Purdy as the starting QB and have plenty of other weapons on offense to help him. One is running back Christian McCaffrey, who was acquired from Carolina in late October. Including the playoffs, the 27-year-old recorded at least one touchdown in 11 of his 14 games with the team, rushing for eight while making five scoring catches.
Deebo Samuel gives the 49ers perhaps the most dangerous double threat in the NFL. The 27-year-old wideout missed some time with injuries last season but registered 1,405 receiving yards and six TD catches while rushing for 365 yards and eight scores in 2021. Receiver Brandon Aiyuk set career highs of 1,015 yards and eight touchdowns last year while tight end George Kittle was tied for third in the league with a personal-best 11 TD receptions.
San Francisco needs to work out a new contract with 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, who led the league with 18.5 sacks despite missing a game. The team lost two key members from its defensive line but added Javon Hargrave to a defense that was first in the NFL in total defense (300.6 yards allowed), points permitted (16.3), interceptions (20) and turnover differential (plus-13), and second against the run (77.7 yards). A 30-year-old defensive tackle, Hargrave was one of four players on the Eagles to reach double digits in sacks last year as he recorded a career-high 11 before notching one against the 49ers in the conference title game.
