Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more
Mike Tomlin has never finished with a losing record as a head coach in the NFL. The 51-year-old took the reins of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007 and ever since, the team has finished with a .500 record or better in each season. In fact, you have to go back to 2003 to find a Steelers team with a losing record, even as Pittsburgh was out-scored in terms of point differential in each of the last two seasons.Â
As the 2023 season nears, the Steelers remain in something of a zone of uncertainty. Pittsburgh scratched and clawed to nine wins in each of the past two years, though the team has a -93 point differential combined over the last 34 regular season games. Tomlin is in place for another run, and for the most part, the Steelers are bringing back the core of a group that does have talent.
That is especially true on defense, where the Steelers ranked firmly in the top ten of the NFL in myriad categories a season ago. Pittsburgh allowed fewer than 21 points per game and led the NFL with 20 interceptions, creating havoc in a way that has been replicable for the franchise across many years. Star power is at the forefront, with TJ Watt back and healthy after appearing in only 10 games last season. He is flanked by Minkah Fitzpatrick, Cameron Heyward, Alex Highsmith, and others on a defense that also invested heavily through the 2023 draft.
On offense, there is more uncertainty. The Steelers averaged only 18.1 points per game last season, leaving plenty to be desired under quarterback Kenny Pickett. Pittsburgh did a nice job in taking care of the ball, committing only 19 turnovers all season, and the team did move the chains with a top-10 mark in third down conversion rate. With that said, the Steelers were deeply inefficient on the ground, and Pittsburgh will be hoping for a leap from Pickett in his second season after arriving as a first round pick in 2022.
