PGA Championship winners and DFS roster
Did you enjoy the one-week break between majors? I hope so, because it's time to turn full attention to the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
The usual suspects top the odds sheet this week, with Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson leading the way at 8/1 at the Westgate LV SuperBook. The Big Three -- McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth -- are looking to avoid going without a major title this season, as 2016 has been the year of the first-time major champion.
Baltusrol is long at 7,400 yards, but it's also a course where ball-striking is at a premium.
Here are my four picks for the season's final major, as well as my daily Fantasy roster:
Open | Current | |
Dustin Johnson | 8/1 | 8/1 |
Rory McIlroy | 8/1 | 9/1 |

Rickie Fowler | 25/1 | 30/1 |
Bubba Watson | 30/1 | 30/1 |
Adam Scott | 25/1 | 30/1 |

My Foursome
Dustin Johnson (8/1): Is it possible to have value as the tourney favorite? Johnson's run right now is ridiculous. Six straight top 10s -- five of those top 5s, including two wins -- and even when he seems ever so slightly off, like last week in Canada, he still finishes T2 and almost chipped in on 18 to force a playoff. I hate picking favorites, anyone that reads this regularly knows that, but I can't deny what he's doing and feel like he could dominate Baltusrol and run away with this thing.
Sergio Garcia (25/1): Garcia has the seventh-best odds on the board, but he's playing at a level right now where I feel better about him than someone like Spieth (who is 12/1). As I said in the intro, it's the year of the first-time major winner and there's no one more fitting to cap off this season than Garcia.
Brandt Snedeker (50-1): Snedeker has been very solid since the U.S. Open with three straight top 25s, including a T5 last week at the RBC Canadian Open. He's striking the ball well and his putting has been fantastic. There's value here at 50-1.
Jason Dufner (100/1): The 2013 PGA Champion has three top 10s in seven PGA appearances. He's finished T8 and T22 in the last two majors and has the ball-striking to get around Baltusrol. If he gets off the tee well this week, I think he'll be in contention come Sunday.
My DFS Roster
Based on a standard $50,000 game on DraftKings
Dustin Johnson ($11,600): It's worth spending this much on Johnson. He's as close to a lock for a top-5 finish as you can get, so even if he doesn't win he's going to give you a great finish. Eat the big price and find value farther down the board.
Sergio Garcia ($9,400): There are seven players more expensive than Garcia, and there aren't seven players on the planet playing better than Garcia coming into the PGA. He's striping the ball and if he putts reasonably well he'll contend. I think there's plenty of value to be found in the mid-$7,000 range to offset the cost of these top two.
Brandt Snedeker ($7,500): The first of those low to mid-$7,000 priced values is Snedeker. As noted above, he's playing very well coming in and I see that form continuing this week.
Charl Schwartzel ($7,300): In his last five events, he's finished T25, T11, T23, T7 and T18. Two of those top 25s came in majors and this season he's fifth in strokes gained on approaches to the green. I expect him to be solid once again and for the price, he's great value here.
Jason Dufner ($7,100): Another guy I love for the value. He finished in the Top 25 in the last two majors and he's one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour (21st in SG on approaches to the green). Take him and don't question the price.
Bill Haas ($7,100): Haas is 35th in SG on approaches on the PGA Tour -- sense a theme here? -- with two top 10s in his last three starts and two top 25s in three major starts this year. I don't think he has the firepower to win, but for the price I'll happily accept a Top 25 from him.
