NFL odds: Who will Arizona Cardinals host in Mexico City game in 2020?
When the Phoenix area was awarded Super Bowl LVII following the 2022 season, one of the conditions was that the NFL could "take" an Arizona Cardinals home game in any season and slot the Cardinals as the host club in an international matchup. On Friday, the NFL announced that Arizona would host the annual Mexico City game in the 2020 regular season.
Fitting that the Cardinals will head south of the border as the first-ever NFL regular-season game held outside the United States was on Oct. 2, 2005, at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with the Cardinals beating the San Francisco 49ers 31-14. The game drew the NFL's largest attendance at the time with 103,467 spectators. The Cardinals also played outside the USA in London against the Rams in 2017 in a regular-season game. Arizona lost that 33-0.
The date and opponent are TBA. The Cardinals' home opponents in 2020 are the Seahawks, 49ers, Rams, Lions, Bills, Dolphins, Redskins, and Eagles. Arizona has a win total of 6 on the NFL futures odds. It appears to be a team on the rise behind Kyler Murray.
The NFL started playing one game per year in Mexico City in 2016, although the 2018 matchup between the Chiefs and Rams was moved to Los Angeles because of poor field conditions at Estadio Azteca. For what it's worth, the designated home team is 1-2 in these games. The Chiefs beat the Chargers 24-17 last year.
Oddly, each Mexico City game has featured an all-AFC matchup if we throw out that 2018 matchup. A California team has been scheduled in each. The 49ers clearly make the most sense this year as defending NFC champions (i.e. marquee opponent).
