New York Giants 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more
New York Giants fans were left with a bitter taste following their unceremonious exit from the NFL playoffs at the hands of their rivals in January. But in the end, they were fortunate to see postseason football, and it looks like there's hope for the future. Most teams can be optimistic heading to training camp, and with coach Brian Daboll ready for his second season in charge, the Giants have as good a reason as any to have a rosy outlook.
The Giants improved by five victories, surpassing their 2021 win total in Week 6, and made the playoffs at 9-7-1. They got their first playoff victory since 2012's Super Bowl XLVI, beating the Vikings 31-24 in the Wild-Card Round. The good feelings didn't last long, however, as NFC East rival Philadelphia demolished them 38-7 in the Divisional Round six days later. The Eagles had 268 rushing yards, compared to 227 total yards for the Giants, who were never in the game.
Now, New York will have to figure out how to compete in the suddenly scrappy NFC East. The Eagles lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl and are expected to be a contender again. The Cowboys still have the talent to win big, and the Commanders also took a step forward last season. The NFC East was the NFL's only division in which no team had a losing record.
On offense, the Giants' hopes are pinned to Daniel Jones, who signed a four-year, $160-million contract. The quarterback made big strides under Daboll, the NFL Coach of the Year. Jones had his best season in terms of completion percentage (62.7) and threw just five interceptions. The 2019 sixth overall pick threw for more than 3,000 yards and topped 700 rushing, while accounting for 22 touchdowns.
Running back Saquon Barkley showed he can still be the workhorse when he's healthy, returning to the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns. Giants general manager Joe Schoen was busy in the offseason giving Jones and Barkley more quality support. New York traded for tight end Darren Waller on draft day, added Jalin Hyatt in the third round and signed Parris Campbell from the Colts. With the newcomers joining Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and 2022 second-round pick Wan'Dale Robinson, the receiving corps should provide Jones with plenty of good options.
The defense was New York's weak point last season, but there were plenty of upgrades there as well. Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks was selected with the 24th pick in the first round, and linebacker Bobby Okereke signed as a free agent from the Colts. The Giants were 25th in total yards allowed and 27th against the run last season, but they had some pieces for Schoen to build around.
Tackle Dexter Lawrence was a second-team All-Pro last season, posting 7.5 sacks, and Leonard Williams is still a versatile every-down option. Pro Football Focus calls them "arguably the best interior defender duo in the NFL." Second-year man Kayvon Thibodeaux should begin to thrive this season after he was slowed by an early knee injury in 2022. The sacks didn't come for Thibodeaux in his rookie year, but he had 40 pressures and 13 QB hits, so he was winning the matchups. Williams was banged up last season, so the additions of Rakeem Nunez-Roches from Tampa Bay and A'Shawn Robinson from the Rams bring needed depth.
New York's schedule is one of the league's toughest, with the opener at home against Dallas and road games against the 49ers, Dolphins and Bills in the first six weeks. Throw in a three-game road trip before the bye and two games against the Eagles in the final three weeks, and there aren't many tougher roads. But with Daboll at the helm and some new pieces for him to tinker with, Giants fans can hope for more success. At least for now.
