The Los Angeles Chargers once again enter the upcoming NFL season with considerable expectations. Los Angeles finished with ten regular season wins in 2022, including four victories in the last five games to secure a playoff berth. Then, the Chargers took a 27-0 lead in a Wild Card matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, only to lose that lead and exit the postseason with a whimper. Still, the Chargers have the most important position solved with quarterback Justin Herbert, and there is plenty of talent on the roster.
Los Angeles was clearly above-average on offense a season ago. The Chargers averaged 23.0 points per game and ranked in the top ten of the NFL in total yards, first downs, and third down efficiency. Much of that success can be traced to a dynamic passing game. Herbert has more than 14,000 passing yards in his first three seasons, illustrating the prolific nature of his ability. Herbert also finished No. 2 in the NFL in both completions and passing yards last season despite injuries to his top two wide receivers.
Part of the Chargers' explosiveness can also be attributed to a tremendous and versatile running back in Austin Ekeler. He generated more than 1,600 total yards last season and caught 107 passes out of the backfield. Ekeler unlocks many things for the Chargers, and Los Angeles also has a pair of top-tier wideouts in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. The next question will be along the offensive line, where the Chargers did make notable investments in the offseason.
On defense, the track record is a lot more mixed. Los Angeles allowed almost 23 points per game last season and finished in the middle of the pack in various advanced metrics. The Chargers were extremely porous against the run, allowing the most yards per carry (5.4) in the NFL and finishing in the bottom five in rushing yards allowed in 2022. Still, there is talent there, headlined by the duo of Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack up front. All told, Los Angeles brings real upside, even while operating from a challenging division that is also occupied by the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
