Houston Astros toss another no-hitter, Seattle Mariners no-hit victims again
Aaron Sanchez had a 6.07 ERA with the Toronto Blue Jays before he was traded to the Houston Astros last week. It's amazing what a change of scenery can do -- Sanchez tossed six innings of no-hit ball against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night, then three relievers finished the job in a no-hitter and 9-0 victory.
Sanchez went six innings before Will Harris, Joe Biagini and Chris Devenski finished it off. It was the Astros' first no-hitter since 2015, when Mike Fiers tossed one against the Dodgers, and the 12th in franchise history. Only the Dodgers, with 13, have more.
In today's age of pitch counts and arm protection, it was the third combined no-hitter over the last two seasons -- there were three combined no-no's over the previous 20 seasons, from 1998-2017. There have been 14 combined no-hitters in MLB history including two this year. The first was July 12 by the Los Angeles Angels in their first home game after the passing of pitcher Tyler Skaggs, a 15-0 blowout -- also against the Mariners.
SPORTSLINE: UPDATED 2019 WORLD SERIES ODDS
Sanchez is only the second pitcher ever to throw the opening innings of a no-hitter in his first start with a new team. Mark Langston did it with the Angels back in 1990 -- that was also against the Mariners.
CBS SPORTS: MLB TRADE CHIPS WHO WOULD BE TRADED THIS OFF-SEASON
While we're picking on the Mariners -- they've been no hit twice this season after being no-hit just three times in the previous 42 years. Their two combined no-hitter losses in 2019 were by a combined 24-0, the largest losses of combined no-hitters ever.
