Fantasy Baseball: Plate discipline leaderboard, mPDI midseason update
Looking to identify potential hitting sleepers? Ariel Cohen has devised a new method of judging hitters that can help you find players with a change of taking a step forward this season.Â
Ariel is the creator of the ATC (Average Total Cost) Projection System. He has been nominated and is a finalist for two FSWA Awards in 2018 -- Baseball Article of the Year, and Baseball Writer of the Year. Ariel and his Fantasy partner, Reuven Guy, have used the ATC system projections to finish in the money in several NFBC, RTSports, Tout Wars and other national leagues, racking up several division titles.
And now he's looking into plate discipline to find which players go up to the plate with the best approach. Cohen's new stat, mPDI (Maddux Plate Discipline Index), is a metric that quantifies the percentage of time hitters swing at the right pitches, and avoid the wrong ones. The concept here is pretty simple: Going after hittable pitches is good; swinging at hard-to-hit pitches is bad.Â
Using this metric, Cohen identifies Cavan Biggio as one of the best plate discipline hitters in the game, with the potential to turn into a star Fantasy option.Â
