Cleveland Browns 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more

The Browns will be banking on Deshaun Watson for a big year, and he has more help around him, so can Cleveland make a playoff run in 2023? Find out what SportsLine's NFL experts have to say about the upcoming season

The Cleveland Browns are looking for a rebound in 2023, and they hope a full season from quarterback Deshaun Watson and a solid offseason help them contend in the AFC North. Cleveland went 7-9 last season as Watson missed the first 11 games on suspension. Jacoby Brissett was decent as the starter, but he lacked weapons and the defense struggled early as the Browns started 2-5.

Cleveland went all-out to fix the problems, bringing in several receivers who should help the passing game complement star running back Nick Chubb. The defense wasn't good enough, either, and the Browns also went to work on that. Jim Schwartz was brought in to run the defense, and he'll build the unit to try to make more splash plays.

Caesars Sportsbook lists the Bengals as the +135 favorite to win the AFC North in its latest 2023 NFL futures odds. The Browns (+380) are third, behind the Ravens (+250) but ahead of the Steelers (+500). Cleveland is +2000 to win the AFC and +3500 to win the Super Bowl, while the over/under for regular-season wins is 9.5.

The offense was middle-of-the road in 2022, scoring just over 21 points per game (18th in NFL). It was 22nd in passing (202.6 yards) but sixth in rushing (146.5). There were a few bright spots, with Chubb ranking third in the league with 1,525 rushing yards. Receiver Amari Cooper (1,160 yards, nine TDs) and tight end David Njoku (58 receptions) needed more playmakers around them, and now they should have some.

The Browns added speedy receivers Elijah Moore and Marquise Goodwin and selected Cedric Tillman out of Tennessee in the draft. Tillman was a star for the Volunteers before an ankle injury slowed him last year, and he slipped to the third round. The 6-foot-3 receiver topped 1,000 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in 13 games as a junior, but was limited to six games last season. Moore was a second-round pick for the Jets but struggled to reach his potential in the unstable offense.

Watson was a bright young star in the NFL before off-field issues derailed his Texans career. The rust was evident last season as he threw seven TD passes and five interceptions in the final six games. The Browns gave up a ton to get him, so they expect a lot better in 2023. The 27-year-old threw for 4,823 yards to lead the NFL in his final season in Houston and had 33 TD passes. He threw just seven picks and also topped 400 yards rushing. Watson and Cooper started to get in sync late last year, but the receiver was slowed by a hip injury. The Browns went 3-3 in Watson's six starts.

The offseason also was spent adding pieces to complement defensive cornerstones Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward. Garrett had 16 sacks, tied for second in the league, and while Ward had a bit of an off year, he has 13 interceptions and 65 pass breakups in five NFL seasons.

Garrett will have pass-rushing help from Za'Darius Smith, who had 26 sacks in two seasons with the Packers from 2019-20. He had 10 last season with the Vikings, coming back from back surgery that forced him to miss the 2021 season. Dalvin Tomlinson also was brought in as a free agent to shore up the interior of the defensive line. Safety Juan Thornhill will join emerging star Grant Delpit, who had four interceptions in his second season. Schwartz should have all the pieces to run an aggressive defense that can more big plays.

Cleveland has the benefit of playing one of the easier schedules in the NFL, but it's front-loaded with tough foes. The Browns kick things off with a chance to make a statement against the rival Bengals before a visit to Pittsburgh for Monday Night Football. They also host the Ravens in a division matchup before a Week 5 bye to prepare for the 49ers. How they navigate the first six weeks will go far in determining the Browns' fate for 2023. Watson returns to Houston in Week 16, and a visit to Cincinnati could have huge implications to close things out.
