Another NFL season looms on the horizon, which means the time has come for the most hopeful Buffalo Bills fans to go through their annual late-summer ritual: believing that this is the year that the football gods finally, finally, finally let go. In 63 previous seasons, the Bills have never won the Super Bowl. That includes the last four years in which they've reached the playoffs every season but have advanced past the divisional round only once. But 2023 really could be Buffalo's year. Maybe.
The Bills obviously have the talent to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy. Quarterback Josh Allen has helped the team win 47 games over the last four seasons and remains one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL. Receiver Stefon Diggs has caught 338 passes over the past three seasons, which is tied for the best in the league over that time. Led by Allen and Diggs, Buffalo averaged 28.4 points per game last season, behind only the Chiefs (29.2).
On the other side of the ball, the Bills return the heart of a defense that limited opponents to 17.9 points per game last season, second in the NFL, behind only the 49ers (16.3). However star pass rusher Von Miller (eight sacks in 11 games last season) is still recovering from a torn ACL, which he suffered in a Thanksgiving Day game against the Lions, and the timing of his return remains uncertain. His availability -- or unavailability -- could very well determine the direction of Buffalo's season.
In the offseason the front office made some key additions. First-round pick Dalton Kincaid, a tight end from Utah, gives Allen a unique pass-catching option in the mold of the Chiefs' Travis Kelce. Free agent Connor McGovern, a standout pass blocker who is projected to start at left guard, helps address the team's need to better protect Allen. On defense, free agent Leonard Floyd, who has 47.5 sacks and 103 quarterback hits in seven NFL seasons, can help fill the pass rush void while Miller remains out.
Despite playing in the rugged AFC East and facing both of last season's Super Bowl teams on the road, the Bills figure to make another playoff appearance. And with the blessings of the football gods, 2023 will be Buffalo's year. Maybe.
