Breaking down Heisman contenders following Week 2 action
When the 2019 Heisman Trophy odds were introduced, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was 250-1 longshot. By the end of Week 1 of the college football season, those odds were all the way down to 12-1.
Expect another move this week in Burrow's chances to claim college football's top individual honor following his performance Saturday night in Austin. Burrow tossed for a career-high 471 yards on 31-of-39 passing with four TDs, leading the No. 6-ranked Tigers to a 45-38 victory over No. 10 Texas.
Burrow ranked 30th in odds before Week 1, and was tied for fifth at 12-1 prior to Saturday. By the start of Week 3, time will tell where he stands up with some of the other top Heisman contenders.
Here's how other leading Heisman candidates fared on Saturday:
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama (2-1) -- The big favorite hasn't done anything to diminish his standing. Following Saturday's 62-10 rout of New Mexico State, the Crimson Tide QB has completed 76 percent of his passes for 563 yards, seven TDs and no INTs. The competition level rises next Saturday when the Tide plays at South Carolina for their SEC opener.
Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson (7-2) – Lawrence's odds went up after a lackluster opening game against overmatched Georgia Tech and might rise again this week. He was an efficient 24-of-35 for 268 yards, one TD and one INT in a 24-10 win over Texas A&M on Saturday, solid but perhaps not spectacular compared to other Heisman challengers. Right now he ranks 59th in passing yards (436) with two TDs and three INTs.

Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma (6-1) – Hurts has had no hiccups since joining the Sooners, completing 83 percent of his passes with six TDs and no INTs. Oklahoma plays at UCLA next Saturday night.
Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin (10-1) – The Badgers have destroyed the competition to a tune of 110-0 so far, and Taylor has done his part. Saturday against Central Michigan, the reigning national rushing leader gained 102 yards on 19 carries with three TDs and scored on a reception as well.
CBS SPORTS: CAN ANYONE CHALLENGE CLEMSON?
Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State (12-1) – Fields has thrown for six TDs and run for three more in the Buckeyes' two wins, including an impressive 42-0 rout of Cincinnati on Saturday. He has yet to throw an interception.
Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson (12-1) – The second Tigers player on the list, he statistically didn't dominate as may be expected for a top Heisman contender, rushing for only 53 yards on 16 carries with no TDs in Clemson's win over A&M. He's still averaging 9.2 yards per carry thanks to a dominant performance against Georgia Tech the week before.
Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas (12-1) – The Longhorns may have lost to LSU on Saturday night, but you can't blame Ehlinger. He went 31-of-47 passing for 401 yards, four TDs and no INTs, and also rushed 19 times for a team-high 60 yards and another score. The loss won't help his Heisman chances, but any rise won't be correlated to his individual performance.Â
