2024 NFL Week 3 officiating angles: Finding edges in Ravens-Cowboys, Dolphins-Seahawks and more

SportsLine expert Larry Hartstein dives into the betting trends to know involving Week 3's referee assignments

This column -- a collaboration with NFL officiating guru Joe Gibbs -- went 37-23 (plus 11.7 units) last season using referee tendencies in our handicapping, and we're off to a 4-2 start (plus 1.8 units) this year. Last week we hit Colts-Packers Under 41 (16-10 Packers) and Arizona -1 over the Rams (41-10 Cardinals) but missed on Giants +2 (21-18 Commanders).

Gibbs (not the Hall of Fame coach, the NFL referee expert who tweets @NFLrefstats1) is working with SportsLine again to deliver three weekly bets. Before you make any Week 3 NFL picks or NFL parlays, you need to see what Gibbs and SportsLine senior analyst Larry Hartstein have to say about the officiating crews' tendencies.

A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach he honed working for Pro Football Focus. Hartstein tied for 52nd place (out of 1,598 entries) in the 2022 Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, going 53-34-3 ATS. His weekly contest selections form the basis of his NFL best bets column, which is 81-51-3 (61.3%, +24.65 units) since its inception in 2022.

We can tell you Hartstein and Gibbs are betting the Ravens -1, in part because Ron Torbert drew the assignment. Torbert officiated when Dallas was blown out at home by the Packers in last season's wild-card round, making the Cowboys 1-4 SU and ATS at home with Torbert in the Dak Prescott era.

"Home underdogs struggle with Torbert, amassing a 15-29 ATS (35 percent) mark in that span," Gibbs said. It doesn't hurt that the Cowboys' special teams are tied for first this season in penalties.

The Cowboys are again a top-10 penalized team for offensive holding after two games. This has been an issue that has plagued this team the past few seasons. And no officiating crew has called a higher percentage of its overall penalties on the offensive line over the past three seasons than Ron Torbert's crew."

Hartstein and Gibbs also are sharing key officiating angles in Dolphins-Seahawks and Panthers-Raiders. You need to see this key referee data before locking in your picks!
