2024 Mountain West futures odds: Conference winner picks, top longshots, win total best bets and more to know

Get ready for the 2024 college football season with our dive into the Mountain West Conference

The coaching carousel has been spinning rapidly in the Mountain West Conference, as seven of the 12 teams have new head coaches as they head into the 2024 season while the person in charge of the reigning champion enters his first full campaign. That person is Spencer Danielson, who took over for the fired Andy Avalos at Boise State on an interim basis in late 2023 with the club owning a 5-5 record and guided the Broncos to three consecutive victories, including a 44-20 triumph over the top-seeded UNLV Rebels in the conference championship game, before they were defeated 35-22 by UCLA in the LA Bowl.

Danielson and Boise State are expected to enjoy similar success this season and possibly even earn a berth in the expanded College Football Playoff. Running back Ashton Jeanty is a dangerous dual threat, but the Broncos will have a new starting quarterback as Taylen Green transferred to Arkansas following the Mountain West Conference Championship Game. That will be either redshirt sophomore Maddux Madsen or redshirt freshman Malachi Nelson, who transferred to Boise State after completing one of the three passes he attempted at USC last year.

Among the teams with brand-new head coaches this season are the Fresno State Bulldogs and Wyoming Cowboys, both of whom finished 2023 with 9-4 records. As he did for the New Mexico Bowl victory over New Mexico State last December, assistant Tim Skipper takes over at Fresno State on an interim basis for Jeff Tedford, who stepped down in mid-July due to health concerns. Meanwhile, Wyoming defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel was promoted to head coach for the first time in his career as Craig Bohl retired after 10 seasons with the Cowboys.

Fresno State and UNLV are considered the top two teams to challenge Boise State for the conference title. The Rebels went 9-5 in 2023, Barry Odom's first year as a head coach since guiding Missouri to a 25-25 record over four seasons from 2016-19. Before making any Mountain West bets for the 2024 season, you need to see what legendary college football handicapper Bruce Marshall has to say.
