2024 Breeders' Cup: Eight horses to bet Friday and Saturday from California racing insider
If the Kentucky Derby is hose racing's Super Bowl, then the Breeders' Cup is horse racing's Olympics. The two-day event brings together more than 170 horses from nine countries and five continents to crown champions in 14 different races. From 2-year-olds to older horses, fillies to colts, turf horses to dirt horses, sprinters to marathoners, the Breeders' Cup has it all. This year's Breeder's Cup begins Friday at Del Mar just north of San Diego.Â
With longshot winners common at every Breeders' Cup, you'll want to see what California-based racing reporter and analyst Michelle Yu, who is at Del Mar for the event, has to say before making any 2024 Breeders' Cup picks.
Few people in racing are as well-connected as Yu. An on-air host and reporter who has provided racing analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders' Cup, Yu has spent a lifetime in racing. Prior to her television career, she worked for trainers Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She also is married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.
Yu also has tremendous handicapping chops. In a wide-open Kentucky Derby in 2021, she gave out Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the winner at 12-1. In Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager two years ago, she suggested a play on All Other 3-Year-Olds, which cashed at a whopping 18-1 when Rich Strike won the Derby.
She enters the Breeders' Cup on a roll. This year she correctly called National Treasure to win the Pegasus World Cup, predicted Stronghold's upset win in the Santa Anita Derby and smashed the exacta in the Apple Blossom Handicap. On the Belmont Stakes undercard, she nailed National Treasure's win in the Met Mile and had the winner and exacta in the Woody Stephens Stakes. Anyone who has followed her is way up.
For the 2024 Breeders' Cup, Yu has identified eight horses, including six double-digit longshots, she can't wait to bet. Join SportsLine here to see them.
We can tell you that Yu's "lock of the weekend" is Notable Speech, the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the Breeders' Cup Mile (7:45 p.m. ET Saturday). "Trainer Charlie Appleby has a knack of winning the Mile," she told SportsLine. "He's a perfect 3-for-3, and this colt gives you every sense that Appleby is going to be an unprecedented 4-for-4. If you get close to the 7-2 price, take it and run like the wind."
Moreover, Yu is high on a 30-1 longshot this weekend. "The more ground the better," Yu says about this horse. She is including this horse in her 2024 Breeders' Cup bets, and so should you. You ABSOLUTELY need to see her picks before locking in any of your own.
So what eight horses can Yu not wait to bet on this weekend? And what 30-1 longshot is a must-back? ... Join SportsLine right now to get Michelle Yu's 2024 Breeders' Cup picks, all from the racing insider who has been red-hot all year!
