2023 NFL Mock Draft: Eagles, Texans among six teams to trade up in final first-round projection
After all the months of digging into prospects and rumors, and weeks pouring over betting line movement and what it may mean, the 2023 NFL Draft is finally here. On Thursday, 31 prospects will hear their names called as one of the most unpredictable drafts in recent memory finally gets recorded in ink. Not even the No. 1 pick could escape speculation this week, and good luck trying to figure out what's going to happen from No. 2 onward.
I had a great mock draft last year that nailed 30 of the 32 first-round prospects, including underdogs to crack the first round like Lewis Cine and Dax Hill. I also had five picks on the nose, seven others within one spot of where they were taken and 20 players in all within three spots of their true draft position. All of that was released exclusively here on SportsLine.
This year, I'm giving away my top 10, which itself should feature multiple surprises as draft information becomes harder to come by on a yearly basis and the barest scraps of rumors are moving the market. SportsLine members will get my full mock draft below as I try to top last year's No. 5 out of 32 performance tracked by the site Grading the Experts.
This is as of Thursday morning, but if I hear any reporting I trust that would change my projection, I'll do my best to update this space in the hours leading up to the Carolina Panthers being put on the clock.
1. Panthers: QB Bryce Young, Alabama
Despite Reddit rumors that moved the betting market, Young is the only certainty we have on draft night at this point. Interestingly, Jay Glazer reported several of the other teams looking to move up to No. 1 with Chicago all targeted Young, which may be enough to take some, if not all, out of the market for the other quarterbackss.
2. Texans: EDGE Will Anderson, Alabama
QB should be the pick, but the Texans reportedly aren't high on the quarterbacks outside of Young, and a Bill Belichick disciple in the front office isn't going to force a pick he doesn't believe in. The Alabama connection is just too strong for me to pass on Anderson for Tyree Wilson, even if the Texans have reportedly cleared the latter's medicals.
3. Cardinals: OT Paris Johnson Jr., Ohio State
Johnson going ahead of his collegiate teammate at quarterback is something no one could have predicted throughout this process, but it sounds like there's a legitimate chance the Cardinals prioritize Johnson over an edge rusher if they can't find a buyer for this pick.
4. Colts: QB C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
The Colts have reportedly been enamored with Will Levis since the combine, and Jim Irsay is going to put stock in Peyton Manning's sign-off on Levis as a franchise quarterback. Was it all a smokescreen? And even if the answer is "no," will Stroud unexpectedly being available cause the franchise to go that direction? I'll go with the guy who was legitimately in the mix for the No. 1 pick.
5. Seahawks: DT Jalen Carter, Georgia
A major shift in the betting market indicates Carter should be the choice for Seattle when they get on the clock, and if they're comfortable with him off the field, I don't think anyone else "slipping" to this pick like Will Anderson matters considering Carter could be the No. 1 prospect on a majority of boards based purely on talent.
6. Lions: CB Devon Witherspoon, Illinois
I think this is Stroud's floor, and I would not be shocked if the Lions decide to get one of the top four quarterbacks in this draft with this pick considering they're finally projected to be out of this range of the draft on a regular basis. But with the tier drop at QB after Stroud, I'll let common sense prevail and go with the prospect most heavily linked to Detroit here.
7. Eagles: EDGE Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech (TRADE)
Eagles receive No. 7
Raiders receive No. 10, 62
If Anderson or Wilson get into range for the Eagles, I expect them to figure out a trade up to land him. Wilson becomes the long-term successor for 35-year-old Brandon Graham, and finding that type of prospect should be a priority for Philadelphia in this draft. It just so happens that slot is filled by the player who could be the top overall defender on some team's boards.
8. Texans: QB Will Levis, Kentucky (TRADE)
Texans receive No. 8
Falcons receive No. 12, 161, 2024 2nd
Opinions conflict on whether the Texans like Levis enough to take him at No. 2 after the Kentucky quarterback shifted to being the favorite for that pick at one point this week. But Houston has the ammunition to get both the defensive blue-chipper they like most and the third QB off the board, addressing the franchise's biggest need since the Deshaun Watson saga began.
9. Bears: OT/G Peter Skoronski, Northwestern
Offensive line help makes all the sense in the world for the Bears, and here they get someone who can be tried at tackle with a Plan B of becoming a guard with Pro Bowl upside. He elevates Chicago's run blocking, key for a team with a rushing weapon at quarterback in Justin Fields.
10. Raiders: CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon (f/PHI)
The Raiders pick up an extra second-round pick by moving down three spots, which makes a ton of sense when there are several prospects at the Raiders' original pick who would all be good additions at positions of need for Las Vegas. Here Gonzalez is who's left, but he's also commonly projected to the Raiders at No. 7 as well.
