2023 NBA Champions: Denver Nuggets, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray by the numbers
On Monday evening at Ball Arena, the Denver Nuggets won the 2023 NBA championship. It was the franchise's first-ever title, and the Nuggets outlasted the Miami Heat in five games, including a pair of impressive road wins in Game 3 and Game 4 before a victory in front of the team's home faithful in Game 5. Nikola Jokic was named NBA Finals MVP for his tremendous work as the centerpiece, though Denver executed beautifully throughout the entire postseason, building around Jokic's unique strengths with top-shelf aptitude, talent, and fit.Â
Prior to the NBA Finals win over the Miami Heat, the Nuggets laid waste to the Western Conference. First, Denver bludgeoned the Minnesota Timberwolves before a six-game victory over the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix, led by Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, was actually favored in the series, but Denver turned on the jets after the series was knotted at 2-2. Then, Denver swept the Los Angeles Lakers, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, earning extra rest before the NBA Finals. With the Heat defeating the Boston Celtics, the Nuggets entered with home-court advantage and took care of business.
In this space, we'll take a deeper look at the numbers on how the Nuggets were able to make franchise history behind a tremendous and historic overall performance. This includes team-wide dominance, in addition to a one-of-a-kind effort from Nikola Jokic and high-end supporting work from Jamal Murray and many others.
