That last season would be a waste in Tempe was telegraphed more than one of George Foreman's roundhouse rights aimed toward Ali at the Rumble in the Jungle. Herm Edwards began the season with one foot out the door after various rules violations, resultant NCAA investigations, and throwing many assistants under the bus. But the truth was that Edwards was already a dead man walking, and all it took was a 1-2 start and a loss (at Sun Devil Stadium, no less) to MAC Eastern Michigan for Herm's old friend, AD Ray Anderson, to have no option other than hitting the eject button. 

While assistant Shaun Aguano did his best in the interim role and even shepherded a notable upset win over Washington, the Sun Devils were always going to start over after last season, and Anderson pegged up-and-comer Kenny Dillingham, the 32-year-old offensive coordinator at Oregon who had previously bounced around various locales in the SEC, ACC, and American, as the new man in charge, while many of the Sun Angel boosters wondered aloud how Anderson could be allowed to make another big decision after his puzzling Edwards hire turned into such a fiasco...
