2022 PGA Championship field, odds, predictions: Best bets and PGA Tour picks from esteemed golf insider

Golf stats expert Sal Johnson, who knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour, offers his best bets and winners for the year's first major, which tees off Thursday at Southern Hills in Tulsa

The second major of the PGA Tour season tees off Thursday at Southern Hills Country Club. The 2022 PGA Championship will be the eighth major played on the course. Tiger Woods is scheduled to be back in action after a gutsy performance in the Masters, and scorching-hot Masters champion Scottie Scheffler will get a crack at what he has called his favorite course. The latest 2022 PGA Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook list Scheffler and Jon Rahm as the 11-1 co-favorites. Other 2022 PGA Championship contenders include Rory McIlroy (14-1), Justin Thomas (14-1), Collin Morikawa (16-1), Dustin Johnson (18-1), Jordan Spieth (18-1) and Cameron Smith (20-1). Woods, a 15-time major winner who is still recovering from a serious car crash, is 60-1.

Before you consider your bets on the 2022 PGA Championship or make any PGA Tour predictions, you NEED to see what proven golf insider Sal Johnson has to say.

The esteemed golf insider has been around the game for many years and knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour, and he is tuned in to the major championships.

In his last set of predictions for SportsLine, he NAILED the Masters for the third time in four years! Johnson backed Scheffler, who has just been playing too well to be ignored. "Scheffler is on a run where he has been hard to beat, and I see it rolling on at Augusta National," he said before the 25-year-old got his fourth victory of the season. He also called Tiger Woods' unlikely victory at Augusta in 2019 and Dustin Johnson's 2020 win, when he shot a tournament-record 20-under 268.

At the PGA, the past two winners were surprises, with Mickelson winning last year and Collin Morikawa taking the 2020 title in just his second major start. But Johnson backed the winner the previous two years, as Brooks Koepka won in 2018 then joined Woods as the only back-to-back PGA winners the following year.

Now Johnson, the first producer of "Inside the PGA Tour" and longtime ABC Sports golf producer who worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, has released his highly confident 2022 PGA Championship picks.

Shockingly, Johnson is fading Cameron Smith, even though he has been on a tear this season and is one of the top favorites! Instead, he's backing a MASSIVE long shot who comes in at around 100-1 who would net you a MONSTER PAYDAY! His excellent tee-to-green game should fit Southern Hills like a glove. You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before entering any PGA Championship picks!

Who wins the 2022 PGA Championship? Where do Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm finish? And which MASSIVE long shot is a MUST-BACK? ...
