2020 New York Yankees Preview: Projected rotation, starting lineup, prospects, win total
New York Yankees
2019 record: 103-59
Record in one-run games: 18-19
O/U win total from Willam Hill: 100
Key Additions: Gerrit Cole
Key Losses: CC Sabathia, Edwin Encarnacion, Luis Severino (TJ Surgery)
The Yankees didn't make many moves during the offseason, in part because they only needed to make one big move. They signed Gerrit Cole to headline their staff, which is massive considering Luis Severino will miss the whole season, James Paxton will miss the start of the season, and Domingo German will miss half the season.
Projected Rotation
1) Gerrit Cole
2) James Paxton
3) Masahiro Tanaka
4) JA Happ
5) Jordan Montgomery/Deivi Garcia/Jonathan Loaisiga
Gerrit Cole stabilizes this rotation and lets the Yankees compete for the American League title. Paxton will be solid when he returns, and Tanaka will be consistent. They will have a battle for the fifth rotation spot with Luis Severino out for the season. Look for Deivi Garcia or Clarke Schmidt to eventually take control of this job.
Fantasy-relevant relievers
Aroldis Chapman (projected 42 saves, 2.33 ERA)
Adam Ottavino (projected 7 saves, 2.39 ERA)
Major League-ready prospects
Deivi Garcia (SP), Clarke Schmidt (SP), Albert Abreu (SP)
Projected Lineup
1) DJ Lemahieu
2) Aaron Judge
3) Giancarlo Stanton
4) Gleyber Torres
5) Miguel Andujar
6) Gary Sanchez
7) Luke Voit
8) Gio Urshela
9) Brett Gradner
New York's lineup will still be as dominant as it was last season. They lost Edwin Encarnacion, and Aaron Judge could miss the start of the season. However, the Yankees get Miguel Andujar back, as well as many other players who were struggling through injuries. They have plenty of depth as well, headlined by players like Clint Frazier and Mike Tauchman. The only good thing about injuries is they give the next guy up an opportunity, and the Yankees have plenty of guys who got experience in 2019 as a result.
Key bench players
Clint Frazier, Mike Tauchman, Mike Ford
