Super Bowl 54 odds: AFC early 3-point favorite over NFC

On the eve of Wild-Card Weekend, the AFC is an early favorite to beat the NFC in Super Bowl 54.

Thanks largely to the New England Patriots, the AFC has dominated the Super Bowl the past handful of years, winning five of the past seven. And on the early Super Bowl NFL odds, the AFC has opened as a 3-point favorite against the NFC for the game in Miami on the first Sunday in February. FanDuel also offers a moneyline on the winning conference and the AFC is -138 with the NFC at +114.

It's one of the deepest playoff fields ever as six teams – Baltimore (14-2), Kansas City (12-4) and New England (12-4) from the AFC, and San Francisco (13-3), Green Bay (13-3) and New Orleans (13-3) from the NFC – won at least 12 regular-season games, tied for the most such teams in a single postseason in NFL history. There were also six such teams in 2011 (Patriots were upset in Super Bowl by Giants) and 2003 (Patriots beat Panthers in SB).

The combined winning percentage of this season's field is .708, the highest since it was .719 in 2005 (Steelers beat Seahawks in that Super Bowl). There are only two teams with single-digit wins in this field and those are 9-7 Philadelphia and Tennessee, which is a 5-point underdog on the NFL odds for Saturday's game at New England.

Not a huge surprise that the AFC is favored because the team to beat entering the postseason appears to be the 14-2 Ravens, who enter the playoffs on a franchise-record 12-game winning streak behind lock MVP Lamar Jackson, who is the early favorite to win Super Bowl MVP honors as well. The Ravens are the +220 favorites on the NFL futures odds to win a third Super Bowl in franchise history. The AFC has been a favorite in the past three Super Bowls and it was New England each time. The SB favorite is 28-23-2 ATS all-time.

There also has been an early total set for Super Bowl 54: 49.5 points. That was the total of SB LII two seasons ago in Minneapolis when Philadelphia beat New England 41-33. The over has hit in five of the past seven Super Bowls.
