2021 NFL Draft odds: Jaguars clear favorites to land Trevor Lawrence with No. 1 overall draft pick as Jets lose for winning Sunday

Jacksonville is in the driver's seat to "earn" the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft thanks to a shocking Jets victory Sunday.

The biggest upset of this NFL season happened Sunday as the New York Jets were 17-point underdogs at William Hill Sportsbook at the Los Angeles Rams, but Gang Green never trailed in a stunning 23-20 victory. The good news for the Jets is they will avoid becoming the third team to finish a season at 0-16, but the bad is now the Jacksonville Jaguars if they lose the final two games will earn the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and the chance to select franchise-alerting talent Trevor Lawrence of Clemson. SportsLine has odds on which team earns the top pick – two-win Cincinnati still has a shot, too, but that could change Monday night with an unlikely upset of Pittsburgh.

At William Hill Sportsbooks, only six percent of the total dollars wagered on the moneyline was on the Jets. According to ESPN, underdogs of at least 17 points won just three times overall in a 40-year stretch from 1978-2017 but have now done so once in each of the past three seasons: Miami was a 17-point dog at New England in Week 17 last season and prevailed 27-24, while Buffalo was +17 at Minnesota in Week 15 of 2018 and won 21-17.

Sunday was the second-biggest upset in Jets history in the Super Bowl Era. Of course, Joe Namath's AFL Jets were 18-point underdogs for Super Bowl III but knocked off the Baltimore Colts 16-7, which helped lead to the AFL/NFL merger.

Rather oddly, now three teams that had 0-13 records during a season got their first win against an opponent with a winning record. In 2011, the Colts beat the 7-6 Titans, and in 1962 the Raiders beat the 9-3-1 Patriots.

While the Jets and Jaguars are both 1-13, Jacksonville would "win" the tiebreaker of having an easier overall strength of schedule. The Jets opened as 10.5-point underdogs for this Sunday in their home finale against the Cleveland Browns. New York then finishes at New England, which will have nothing to play for so that could be a win.

Jacksonville opened as a 7.5-point underdog Sunday in its home finale vs. Chicago, which is fighting for an NFC Wild-Card spot, and then visits Indianapolis in Week 17 -- and the Colts should have plenty to play for then.

New York's win also could be costly from a head coaching perspective, presuming Adam Gase is fired. The Jets' job was MUCH more attractive with the possibility of the team having Lawrence, considered by some the surest thing QB prospect since John Elway. Now the Jacksonville coaching job could be the best available this offseason with Lawrence, a ton of picks in the next two drafts and the lack of state income tax in Florida.

If the Jets can't get Lawrence, maybe they pass on Ohio State QB Justin Fields at No. 2, take Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell and give Sam Darnold another season as the starter.
