San Francisco 49ers add former Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed to pair with George Kittle

Former Washington tight end Jordan Reed has signed with the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the NFL's top tight ends in George Kittle, but that didn't stop the team from signing former Washington Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed to a contract on Monday. Reed was a very good player for a few years with the former Redskins, but injuries have hampered him throughout his career. He missed all of 2019 due to a seventh documented concussion (Reed's most recent one coming via hit by Atlanta's Keanu Neal in the photo above from the 2019 preseason).

Reed has never played more than 14 games in a season. His best year was in 2015 when he played 14 games and caught 87 passes for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns in being named to the Pro Bowl for the lone time in his career. After that season, the Redskins signed Reed to a five-year extension worth up to $50 million.  Washington released him in February, saving the team $8.5 million in salary cap space. That happened a day after he was finally cleared from the concussion protocol.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan is familiar with Reed as Shanahan was the former offensive coordinator in Washington. The deal is for one year and is filled with incentives. The Niners reportedly beat out the Baltimore Ravens for Reed's services.

Both Shanahan and Niners GM John Lynch have been clear they want to run more two tight-end sets. If Reed is healthy, which is a big if, it's hard to argue against the Niners having the best pair of tight ends in the NFL. Kittle caught 85 passes for 1,053 yards and five scores last year in 14 games and could become the highest-paid tight end in league history any day now.

Ross Dwelley, Daniel Helm and rookies Charlie Woerner and Chase Harrell are the other tight ends on the 49ers' roster. The 49ers lost tight ends Garrett Celek (retirement) and Levine Toilolo (free agency) this offseason.

San Francisco remains the +700 favorite at William Hill sportsbook to repeat as NFC champion.
