NFL most interceptions thrown odds: Trevor Lawrence, Taylor Heinicke favored for unwanted title but likely 8-man race
Topping the NFL in interceptions thrown is obviously a "title" that no quarterback ever wants to win, but some of the best in league history have led in picks in a given year, including Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw and Johnny Unitas to name some. It appears to be an eight-man battle this season with two weeks left, although Trevor Lawrence and Taylor Heinicke are +300 co-favorites.
The Jacksonville rookie, Washington journeyman, Cincinnati's Joe Burrow (+500), Tennessee's Ryan Tannehill (+450) and the LA Chargers' Justin Herbert (+500) all have thrown 14 interceptions. Of course, Lawrence, Burrow, Tannehill and Herbert were all high first-round picks.
Lawrence has been a massive disappointment with just one touchdown pass over his last 280 attempts. It's the longest span of passes by a rookie with pass TD or fewer in the past 30 seasons. Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has more interceptions this season (11) than Lawrence does touchdowns (9). On the bright side (sort of), Lawrence has seven games this season with at least 10 pass attempts, zero TDs and zero picks. Lawrence hasn't thrown a pick in three of his past four games.
Heinicke might catch a break to not lead the league in this category because Washington coach Ron Rivera said Monday that while Heinicke will start this Sunday vs. Philadelphia, backup Kyle Allen "probably" will play. In an embarrassing loss to the Cowboys in Week 16, Heinicke completed just seven passes on 22 attempts and was intercepted twice before being pulled.
Not too long ago, Jets rookie Zach Wilson also was tied for the league lead in picks but he remains at 11 as the No. 2 overall pick hasn't thrown one in three straight games and is +1600 on this prop.
Matthew Stafford (+2000), Patrick Mahomes (+2000) and Lamar Jackson (+2000) are each tied for second with 13 interceptions. Clearly, oddsmakers trust them a bit more to take care of the ball. Stafford and Mahomes might not even need to play Week 18 if their teams are locked into playoff seedings. Jackson is currently hurt.
Regardless, we will have a first-time winner in this statistic. Drew Lock and Carson Wentz tied for the league lead last year with 15 each.Â
