Jets odds of trading Sam Darnold could be near following Friday Pro Day of BYU quarterback Zach Wilson
Early this month, reports trickled out from New York Jets beat writers that the team was not going to trade incumbent starting quarterback Sam Darnold until Jets brass got an in-person look at the top QB prospects for this year's draft. We could see a Darnold trade sooner rather than later because the guy the Jets are widely expected to take at No. 2 overall in next month's draft, BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, will hold his Pro Day on Friday in Provo, Utah.
William Hill Sportsbook has odds up on whom the No. 2 overall pick will be, and Wilson is the heavy -400 favorite. Keep in mind that doesn't necessarily mean the Jets have to take him at No. 2 but that any team does. It's still possible that New York perhaps unloads that pick to Houston in a trade for Deshaun Watson, but that's looking less likely by the day with Watson's off-the-field problems. A very QB-need team like Carolina (also in on Watson) could offer a major haul to trade up to No. 2 as well.
Wilson wasn't considered a top prospect entering the 2020 college football season but made a Joe Burrow-type leap in leading BYU to an 11-1 record – that lone loss by just five points at a very good Coastal Carolina team. Wilson, who will be 22 in August, completed 73.5 percent of his passes (second in the country) for 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns and three picks for a rating of 196.4 that was No. 2 nationally behind Alabama's Mac Jones. Wilson finished eighth in the Heisman voting.
Reportedly in attendance for the Jets on Friday: GM Joe Douglas, new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur (three is the limit at a Pro Day for all NFL teams).
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Wilson also can run – unlike Jones – as he had 70 carries for 254 yards and 10 scores in 2020. Scouts now rave about the guy. NFL.com compares him to Jake Plummer, who had a good but not great pro career. CBS Sports' Dan Schneier compares him to Tony Romo.
Wilson, incidentally, looked absolutely fantastic Friday and is all but a lock as the No. 2 pick now. The highest a BYU player has ever been chosen was No. 5 overall: Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah in 2013 to the Lions and quarterback Jim McMahon in 1982 to the Bears. The CBS Sports Big Board ranks Wilson as the No. 2 overall prospect in the class.
Pro Days are especially important this year as there will be no central NFL Scouting Combine because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL Network will show Wilson's Pro Day at 1 p.m. ET. If he shows well, it could lock him into that No. 2 spot and make the Jets comfortable in dealing Darnold – with teams like San Francisco, Washington, Chicago and perhaps Pittsburgh likely to be at the front of the line. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently reported that eight teams had called the Jets about Darnold.
Just don't expect a Darnold trade this weekend as the Jets surely will want to see Ohio State's Justin Fields at his Pro Day next Wednesday as well. Fields is a +375 second favorite to be the No. 2 overall pick. He was the consensus No. 2 QB prospect behind Trevor Lawrence entering the 2020 college football season. Lawrence is a lock to go No. 1 overall to Jacksonville. How much of a lock? New Jags coach Urban Meyer is skipping Wilson's Pro Day. The only team without an in-person representative is the Los Angeles Rams.
Cross off San Francisco as one potential Jets trade partner for Darnold as the Niners made a blockbuster trade with Miami on Friday for the No. 3 overall pick and will take a QB there. San Francisco reportedly asked the Jets about the No. 2 pick and were turned down.
