Houston Texans trade Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle Seahawks

Unable to reach a long-term deal with the three-time Pro Bowler, the Texans shipped Clowney to Seattle for two players and a third-round pick.

Jadeveon Clowney's time as a Houston Texan is over. On Saturday the Texans agreed to a trade to send the three-time Pro Bowler, whom they selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 2014 NFL Draft, to the Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple reports. The trade ends what was a roller coaster five seasons for Clowney in Houston.

In exchange for the edge-rushing defensive end/outside linebacker, Houston receives a third round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, defensive end/linebacker Barkevious Mingo and linebacker Jake Martin.

Though he was a solid performer for the Texans when healthy, Clowney was not the next-level superstar that he was thought to be when Houston took him No. 1 overall and paired him with defensive anchor J.J. Watt. In his rookie season in 2014 Clowney was just starting to come around when he suffered a knee injury that would require microfracture surgery, ending his season after just four games.

Over the last four seasons, Clowney missed just six games total. In 2016 he was named first-team All-Pro and earned a trip to his first Pro Bowl. But his next two seasons were arguably his best; he had 9½ sacks in 2017 and nine in 2018.

The Texans assigned the franchise tag on Clowney in the offseason, but he did not sign the offer and held out of training camp in hopes of landing a long-term deal along the lines of Khalil Mack's six-year, $141 million contract. In recent weeks, as the sides could not agree to a deal, reports of Houston shopping Clowney around the league intensified.

Though the Texans are badly in need of offensive line help, they were not able to pry one from Seattle. Mingo, 28, has played 94 games with four teams in six NFL seasons, making 151 tackles and 10 sacks. Martin, 23, had seven tackles, including three sacks, last year after the Seahawks selected him in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The trade is contingent on the players passing physicals.
