Cam Newton's MVP odds change drastically; can he join Peyton Manning in record books?

Could Cam Newton win a second NFL MVP Award with his new Patriots team?

The New England Patriots signing quarterback and 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton to a one-year, incentive-laden deal Sunday night has hijacked the NFL landscape this week, while also conveniently covering up some penalties the league handed down for the Patriots' latest act of cheating last season in Cincinnati. That's a story for another day. Newton's addition changed all of the Patriots' futures odds at William Hill sportsbook.

However, the biggest odds shift belonged to Newton himself as he had been a +10000 long shot to win another regular-season MVP Award. Newton was down with the likes of Saints backup quarterback Jameis Winston and Dolphins rookie signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa, whom like Winston may not even play this season depending on what happens.

Newton, though, is now all the way down to +3000 as he looks to join Peyton Manning – who will go into Canton next summer – as the only player in league history to win the MVP with two different franchises. Manning won four with the Indianapolis Colts (2003-04, 2008-09) and one with the Denver Broncos (2013). The guy Newton is replacing, Tom Brady, won three MVPs with the Patriots and is the only New England player to win that award.

One William Hill sportsbook bettor placed $500 on Newton at +10000 to win the MVP on Sunday night, right before the news broke and shifted the odds, for a potential total payout of $50,500.

Could Newton lead the Patriots to Super Bowl 55 in Tampa? New England is now a +750 third-favorite to win the AFC title. Manning and Kurt Warner are the only quarterbacks to win an MVP Award, then change teams and start a Super Bowl with a new team.

Warner won the MVP in 1999 and 2001 with the Rams. In fact, the 1999 version of Warner is the last player to have won the Super Bowl and MVP in the same season. He then led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl following the 2008 season, but the Cards lost to Pittsburgh.
