2020 NFL Draft: TCU's Jeff Gladney picked by Steelers or in first round prop bets
Most NFL experts agree that the primary need for the Pittsburgh Steelers entering the 2020 NFL Draft is on the offensive line, but the Steelers generally have been a franchise that takes the best player available and worries about fit later.
Pittsburgh does not have a first-round pick this year for the first time since 1967 – barring a trade up – thanks to last September's surprising trade with the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Thus, barring a deal the Steelers will pick first at No. 49 overall in Round 2. Could TCU defensive back Jeff Gladney be the choice there?
William Hill sportsbook offers two yes-only props on Gladney for the draft: +500 ($500 return on $100 wager) to be picked by Pittsburgh (doesn't matter at which spot, only that he is to payout) and -120 (bet $120 to win $100) to be a first-round selection by any team.
On the CBS Big Board, Gladney is ranked as the No. 36 overall player and No. 6 cornerback behind Ohio State's Jeff Okudah (No. 4), Florida's CJ Henderson (18), LSU Kristian Fulton (22), Alabama's Trevon Diggs (28) and Clemson's AJ Terrell (30).
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Gladney was a four-year starter for the Horned Frogs. Last year, he had 31 tackles, 14 passes defensed (most in the Big 12) and an interception. He was named second-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12. TCU has had just two defensive backs picked in Round 2 or better overall and not since Jason Verrett was a first-round pick by the Chargers in 2014. He has been a great pro.
Gladney ran a 4.48-yard 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, had a vertical jump of 37.5 inches and did 17 reps on the bench press. NFL.com gives him a grade of 6.40, which equates to "will be starter within first two seasons." Gladney is given a comp of pre-injury Sidney Jones. The former Washington star would have been a first-round pick in 2017, maybe Top 15, but tore his Achilles at his pro day and went 43rd overall to the Eagles.Â
More than a few CBS Sports mock drafts have Gladney in the first round and we agree.
NFL picks: No to Steelers, yes in first round.
