With Tom Brady, could Bucs become first team to reach a Super Bowl held in own stadium?

No team has ever played in a Super Bowl in its own stadium. Adding Tom Brady gives the Tampa Bay Bucs a chance next February.

Tom Brady is going to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when NFL free agency opens on Wednesday, sending shockwaves around the NFL and choosing Tampa Bay over the Chargers – where Brady could have at least stayed in the AFC and would have faced the Patriots in the 2020 regular season.

On the William Hill NFL futures odds, Tampa Bay jumped from +1200 to win the NFC title following this news to +800, behind San Francisco, New Orleans and Dallas). The Bucs haven't reached the NFC Championship Game since the 2002 season when Jon Gruden & Co. beat the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Tampa's Raymond James Stadium will host Super Bowl 55 on Feb. 7, 2021. It wasn't the original host for the game, but in May 2017 the NFL took it from the new Rams/Chargers stadium in Los Angeles because construction was running so far behind. That will be ready for the 2020 season (called SoFi Stadium), but L.A. gets Super Bowl 56 instead.

No team has ever played a Super Bowl in its own stadium. Two have gotten "close." The 1984 San Francisco 49ers played in SB XIX at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif., and the 1979 L.A. Rams reached Super Bowl XIV in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, but their home stadium as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

In the 2017 season, the Minnesota Vikings were hosts of Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and reached the NFC title game but were blown out by Philadelphia.
