Rather than focus as usual on the top-tier NFL quarterbacks in our weekly ranking of starters, let's play Keeping Up With The Joneses. Daniel (New York Giants) and Mac (New England Patriots) share a surname. Lately, the unrelated Jones boys also share something else: misery. Their teams are 1-4 and have scored a half-dozen touchdowns each, tied for fewest in the league.

Daniel exited Sunday's lopsided loss to Miami in the fourth period with a neck injury after absorbing his sixth sack. He has gone down a whopping 28 times in five games. While his protection is shaky, the team might be second-guessing the four-year, $160-million contract it granted him in the offseason.

At least he has not endured getting yanked from the past two games, a fate that has befallen Mac. The Patriots were hopelessly behind in both. Coach Bill Belichick suggested he wanted to spare Jones from mop-up duty and that he remains the starter. Though Jones hardly shoulders the entire blame, he stands at the controls of an offense that last registered a touchdown 35 offensive possessions ago. (The second longest drought? A dreadful 25 for Daniel and the Giants, of course.)

Mac threw the sixth pick-six Sunday of his short NFL stint — fourth at Gillette Stadium —which began in 2021. It is unfair to compare him to the GOAT, but we'll do it anyway: Tom Brady endured just four interception returns for scores at Gillette in his marathon career.
