UEFA Champions League odds, picks, predictions for Jan. 21: Proven model forecasts Dortmund rout, shock losses for two big clubs
UEFA Champions League action continues Tuesday with Matchday 7, with some clubs looking to secure automatic qualification for the round of 16 while others hope to avoid the possibility of elimination. In the new format, the top eight teams get an automatic berth into the round of 16, while teams seeded 9-24 will enter a two-leg playoff draw to determine the remaining eight spots in the round of 16. Teams 25-36 are eliminated and will not be able to access Europa League, which is another modification from previous years.
Liverpool remain unbeaten in Champions League play and should secure an automatic Round of 16 spot with a win Tuesday. Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa also sit in the top eight and could secure automatic Round of 16 qualification with wins.
A handful of clubs likely need results Tuesday to avoid going into Matchday 8 with the threat of elimination. Juventus face Club Brugge in a matchup of two teams currently in the playoff zone. Atalanta and PSV meet teams currently in the elimination zone, while Stuttgart can temporarily get out of the elimination zone with a win over Slovan Bratislava. Lille are in the top eight at the moment but could slide depending on their result against Liverpool. Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Monaco all sit in the playoff zone and could be in danger depending on their performance against clubs currently in the top 8. All of Tuesday's matches will be on Paramount+, which is free for the first week when you sign up here.
