Today in the NBA: Warriors could light up scoreboard in D.C.

Golden State is on a record-setting pace for assists, and Washington struggles on defense. The SportsLine Projection Model comes up with a moderate play on the game in D.C.

NBA viewers might get to relish Golden State in all of its glory Wednesday.

The Warriors are on a scoring binge, having won seven straight while exceeding 120 points in five of those games. And they will prey on the defensively challenged Wizards, who have been blitzed for an average of 115 points in a 1-4 slump.

As deftly as the Warriors are passing the ball, with a phenomenal 68 assists on 89 baskets in the past two games, they might resemble the Globetrotters going against the Washington Generals.

Alas, the Sports Projection Model stopped short of an "A" grade for Golden State, giving the Warriors -10.5 a "B" grade. Only one of the 11 games drew an "A" as of early afternoon, and that was the Bulls +1.5 at Sacramento.

A record the Warrriors would love to take down in D.C. is consecutive games with at least 30 assists. If the number is hit for the eighth in a row, they would surpass the ... Warriors of 1993-94.

The coaching matchup generally is insignificant in a regular-season game, but it bears mentioning.

Steve Kerr, just off injured reserve after back surgery, is 5-0 on the bench with the Warriors. The team's adjustment from the fill-in Luke Walton has been seamless.

For the Wizards, Randy Wittman will be absent for the second game after the death of his brother. Assistant Don Newman stands in with the unenviable task of trying to persuade his players to guard a foe that at times seems unguardable.

The computer submits that Washington will contain the Warriors better than most other teams recently, with a 114-102 final projected.

Last night on SportsLine: When the Lakers averted a franchise-record losing streak Tuesday by downing the T-Wolves, they dealt the Model a defeat that sent its season record on "A" picks to under 55 percent. The computer stands at 121-100 ATS (54.8 percent.)

The analysts say:  Are pro basketball players prone to looking past an immediate opponent to the next one? Matty Simo believes so.

Simo (138-141-3 ATS on NBA picks) says the Thunder might have Golden State on their minds even though the Western Conference heavyweights do not face off until Saturday. First comes the Magic at +12.5.

"While Oklahoma City has won eight of the past nine meetings with Orlando straight-up, the team has struggled to cover the number lately, going 1-6 against the spread in the last seven matchups," Simo writes.

"As double-digit favorites, the Thunder are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 while winning nine times. Earning a road victory is highly doubtful for the Magic, but covering the spread is another story. I like their chances to stay within double digits again."

Trends to note:  A live underdog, based on recent track records, is Philadelphia on Wednesday as host of Atlanta. The 76ers are 5-1 ATS in their last half-dozen home games -- in contrast to the Hawks' 1-4 ATS mark on the road. ... A day of rest sounds like a formula for the Over with combatants Indiana and Brooklyn. The Pacers have gone above the total in seven of their last eight coming off one day between games, and the Nets are 4-0 to the Over in the same scenario. ... The road team in the Heat-Mavericks series has a remarkable 20-5-2 ATS record going back several years. Miami enters the game in Dallas 4-1 ATS in its last five, but the Mavs are on a 16-5 ATS wave at home.

Injuries to watch:  Two days off after a breezy win over the Lakers did not clear up the Hornets' injury headaches in advance of the Cavaliers' game on Wednesday. Nicolas Batum (toe) is doubtful, while Kemba Walker (knee), Cody Zeller (shoulder) and Jeremy Lamb (toe) are questionable. ... The Kings are in no better shape for their game with Chicago. Sacramento's anchor, DeMarcus Cousins (ankle), is questionable, as are Rajan Rondo (toe) and Ben McLemore (wrist). ... A balky knee will cost Tim Duncan another game, his sixth in the last seven, when the Spurs tackle New Orleans. ... Indiana's Ian Mahinmi (back) will sit out his third straight game and sixth of the past nine against Brooklyn. ... Atlanta must carry on against the 76ers minus Tiago Splitter (hip).
