Swimming, track 2020 Tokyo Olympics odds, best bets: Predictions for key events from SportsLine Olympics expert

Olympics guru Mike Tierney, who cashed big at the 2016 Summer Games and 2018 Winter Games, is revealing his best bets for the top events each day, and he already nailed a big upset at Tokyo 2020

The world's fastest athletes on water are starting to give way to the fastest on land when the 2020 Tokyo Olympics near the end of the week. Swimming wraps up Saturday night with the women's 4x100-meter medley relay final, while the starting gun went off for track and field on Thursday night. American swimming star Caeleb Dressel, who won the 100-meter freestyle final Wednesday night, has at least two more opportunities at gold.

Team USA also has a good shot at numerous medals in track and field. U.S. sprinters Trayvon Bromell and Ronnie Baker are the top two favorites in the men's 100 meters, while Sydney McLaughlin and Dililah Muhammad lead the way in the women's 400-meter hurdles.

Dressel will swim in Friday's 100-meter butterfly final (9:30 p.m.) and 50-meter freestyle semifinals (10:16 p.m.), and he is expected by oddsmakers to win both events. The American is the -700 favorite in the 100 fly and the -450 top choice in the 50 free, according to the latest 2020 Tokyo Olympics swimming odds from William Hill Sportsbook. McLaughlin (-225) and Muhammad (+275) start Round 1 in the women's 400 hurdles Friday at 8 p.m. ET, and Bromell (-120) and Brown (+400) will run in men's 100-meter heats at 10:30. Before you lock in any 2020 Tokyo Olympics picks or predictions, you really need to see what SportsLine's Olympics expert, Mike Tierney, has to say. (Head over to our 2021 Olympics page for more analysis and updates)

A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. In the past two Olympic Games, his advice helped those who followed him cash in big, and he already has nailed a winner at Tokyo 2020.

Before Sunday's men's triathlon, Tierney tabbed Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt as his choice to win gold, and that bet paid off big at +600. The Olympics expert saw good value in the Norwegian, who had won twice this year and was the 2019 Grand Final champion.

"When an event is as wide open as the guys' three-in-one sport, look for a price and go with the hot hand." Tierney told SportsLine.

The 27-year-old Blummenfelt was in disbelief as he pulled away from the younger runners in the final stages to win by 11 seconds over Alex Yee for his nation's first medal in the sport. But picking a winner was nothing new for Tierney.

At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018, he nailed Suzanne Schulting (+2500) of the Netherlands and Norway's Havard Lorentzen (+800) to triumph in speed skating and the USA's Mikaela Shiffrin (+185) to win the giant slalom. Tierney also took the Under (10.5) on the Americans' gold-medal count, and that also cashed as the USA came in with nine.

And at the Rio 2016 Summer Games, Tierney told readers to bet Over on Team USA's gold medal count (41.5) and Over on Team USA's overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes. Anyone who followed Tierney's advice cashed in huge!

Now, Tierney has been studying the 2020 Olympics event schedule and digging down into the individual sports. He has released two other CONFIDENT best bets, all paying 5-1 or better!

One shocker: Tierney is fading the Australians in the women's 50-meter freestyle! Emma McKeon (+250) and Cate Campbell (+300) are the favorites, but they haven't looked invincible. "In this event that is over in a blink, gold-medal contenders abound," Tierney tells SportsLine.

Tierney sees an opening and is taking the best value on the board for Friday night's women's 50-meter freestyle final. He is rolling with a swimmer who has put up plenty of times that rival the Aussies' performances, and she could pull off a HUGE victory in this blink-and-it's-over sprint. He also has released two other CONFIDENT picks in different competitions.

All his best bets return 5-1 or higher, so you ABSOLUTELY have to see Tierney's analysis and who he is picking before you make any 2020 Olympics picks or Tokyo 2020 swimming predictions of your own.
