Super Bowl 57 Chiefs vs. Eagles props, odds: Bettors not expecting Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts to catch a 'Philly Special' pass

Could a quarterback catch a pass in Super Bowl 57?

The last time the Philadelphia Eagles were in the Super Bowl, they staged one of the most memorable trick plays in the NFL history, which resulted in a touchdown caught by quarterback Nick Foles and was a big part of Philly's 41-33 upset of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52. Could a quarterback catch a pass in Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Eagles? Bettors at Caesars Sportsbook are decidedly against it.

The "Philly Special" was the highlight of that Eagles-Patriots Super Bowl. With the Eagles up 15-12 and facing fourth-and-goal from the New England 1-yard line with 34 seconds left in the first half, Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson opted go for the TD instead of the chip-shot field goal on the recommendation of Foles.

Running back Corey Clement took a took a direct snap from center Jason Kelce, pitched to tight end Trey Burton, and Burton hit an uncovered Foles (who hadn't lined up at QB) in the end zone. Foles became the first player in Super Bowl history to both throw and catch a touchdown pass and would go on to win MVP honors. Only Kelce is still with the Eagles.

The market for whether a quarterback would have a reception in Super Bowl 57 opened with Yes +475 and No -650 but has now been driven up to Yes +700 and No -1200 because No has taken more overall money at Caesars Sportsbook than any other prop side for the game as of this writing. The biggest wager was from a New York bettor who placed $13,000 on No -650 for a potential win of $2,000, and there have been seven bets of at least $1,000 taking N0. That has accounted for 99.4% of the handle overall.

"Last time the Eagles were in the Super Bowl, we all remember the 'Philly Special,'" said Adam Pullen, Assistant Director of Trading at Caesars Sportsbook. "So far, sharp bettors are not convinced that it will happen again. Usually sharps are going to lay the big prices on NO for things that are not likely to happen. But the public will have enough of YES that will overwhelm the liability on the NO bets."

Mahomes does have one catch in his career -- he completed a pass to himself in Week 17 this season against Denver. The Chiefs had a second-down play at midfield and Mahomes' pass was batted back to him, so he caught it and took off running to gain 6 yards. Hurts caught a pass in 2020 but hasn't for the past two seasons.
