Redskins trade for Kyle Allen, now surely out on Jameis Winston or Cam Newton
The market for two former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks who led their schools to national championships and were the No. 1 overall pick continues to shrink. Those two would be former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Jameis Winston and Carolina's Cam Newton. The Washington Redskins had been linked to both as potential competition for young Dwayne Haskins, but apparently the Skins are out on them following Monday's trade for the Panthers' Kyle Allen. Washington gave up a fifth-round pick for him.Â
Carolina signed Teddy Bridgewater as its new starter earlier this month and earlier Monday signed XFL star quarterback P.J. Walker, which meant Allen's time with the Panthers was going to end sooner or later; Newton is still on the roster as the team tries to find a trade partner, but it might have to simply release the former NFL MVP.
With Newton hurt last year, Allen made 12 starts and was 5-7. He completed 62 percent of his passes overall for 3,332 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 picks. Allen started off strong and Carolina won five of the first six games in which he appeared (one in relief) but lost his final seven when Allen's numbers started going south.
He was sacked 46 times, the third-most by any Panthers quarterback in a single season. The Panthers re-signed Allen, who was an exclusive rights free agent, to a one-year deal earlier this offseason.
It seems possible he could beat out Haskins for the Redskins' starting job because Washington's new head coach is former Panthers coach Ron Rivera. The team's new offensive coordinator is Scott Turner, who was promoted to that same role following Week 13 last season with the Panthers. He was Carolina's quarterbacks coach in 2018. Thus, Allen clearly will know the Redskins' offense better than Haskins will.Â
Haskins got into nine games as a rookie with Washington last year, completing 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,365 yards, seven TDs and seven picks. Former Redskins starter Case Keenum signed with Cleveland in free agency to back up Baker Mayfield.
On the William Hill NFL futures odds, Washington has a win total of 5.5 and so does Carolina. Only Cincinnati (5) and Jacksonville (4.5) are lower.Â
