Real Madrid-Man City again? Predicting Champions League knockout matchups based on projections from proven model

We create the 2024-25 Champions League knockout bracket using Matchday 8 projections from SportsLine's model

All 36 teams in the Champions League will be in action Wednesday, Jan. 29 as Europe's top club competition completes its group stage with Matchday 8. The top eight teams will automatically go into the Round of 16, while teams 9-24 will compete in a two-leg playoff for a Round of 16 berth. Teams 25-36 will be eliminated, and there's no path to the Europa League in the new format. Nine teams have already been eliminated ahead of Matchday 8, while Liverpool and Barcelona have secured Round of 16 spots. Wednesday's matches will be on Paramount+, which is free for the first week when you sign up here.

SportsLine's model has projected all 18 Champions League matches on Matchday 8, and we're using those projections to put together a potential bracket for the knockout stage. The No. 9 and No. 10 seeds will be drawn with the No. 23 and No. 24 seeds with the winners facing the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds. Seeds 15 and 16 will be drawn with seeds 17 and 18, with the winners facing the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. On the other side of the bracket, the No. 11 and No. 12 seeds will be drawn with the No. 21 and No. 22 seeds. The winners face the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. Seeds 13 and 14 will be drawn with seeds 19 and 20, and the winners face the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

In the new Champions League format, the first tiebreaker is goal differential. Goals scored is the second tiebreaker, followed by away goals scored. If teams are still tied, wins is the next tiebreaker followed by away wins. If teams are still tied, the number of points their Champions League opponents earned is the next tiebreaker. Opponent goal differential and opponent goals scored are the next two tiebreakers. If teams are still tied, disciplinary record is the next tiebreaker. The final tiebreaker is the UEFA club coefficient.
