Patrick Mahomes lands 10-year extension and favored to lead NFL in passing yards for first time
Is there any argument that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the NFL? He has been a starter for only two full seasons but already owns a regular-season MVP Award as well as Super Bowl MVP. On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted out that Mahomes and the Chiefs had agreed on a 10-year contract extension through the 2031 season. Schefter didn't give specifics but there's no doubt that Mahomes is going to be the first NFL player with a $200 million contract. It's probably double that. (Update: Deal is worth $450 million with $140 million guaranteed.)
As fantastic as Mahomes has been, he has not led the NFL in passing yards in a season yet but is the +450 moneyline betting favorite to do so this year at William Hill sportsbook.
In his 2018 league MVP season, Mahomes finished second in passing yards with 5,097 behind Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (5,129). Last year, Mahomes missed two games due to injury (and about a half of a third) and finished 10th in the NFL with 4,031 yards. Tampa Bay's Jameis Winston was the leader with a career-best 5,109 yards. He's now a backup to Drew Brees with the Saints.
No member of the Chiefs has ever won the passing yardage title. Mahomes also is the +350 favorite on the moneyline odds to win another regular-season MVP Award. The last player to repeat there was Peyton Manning in 2008-09 with the Colts.Â
The SportsLine Projection Model forecasts Mahomes to throw for 4,541 yards this season. That almost surely would not be enough to lead the league. Kansas City opens the season Sept. 10 in the annual Kickoff Game by hosting the Houston Texans. The Chiefs are -10 on the NFL odds.Â
