Pacers vs. Mavericks Tuesday NBA injury report, odds: Maxi Kleber set for return with Dallas struggling since Kyrie Irving trade
The Kyrie Irving trade hasn't been a huge success yet for the Dallas Mavericks, as the Mavs are just 1-3 when Irving and fellow All-Star Luka Doncic play together. However, the Mavericks may add another important piece Tuesday with the return of 3-point shooting big man Maxi Kleber from injury. Dallas is -7.5 against visiting Indiana.
Immediately following the Irving trade, the Mavericks' odds to win their second-ever NBA title shrunk to +1200 at BetMGM. That number is back to +1600 following a stunning 111-108 home loss to the Lakers on Sunday. Dallas was up by as many as 27 points before being defeated. It was the biggest comeback win for the Lakers since Dec. 6, 2002 when they overcame a 30-point deficit against the Mavericks. It tied for the third-largest blown lead in Dallas history. NBA teams with a lead of 27 points or more were 138-0 this season before Sunday.
"As a team we've got to mature," Coach Jason Kidd said. "We've got a lot of new bodies coming back and we have to grow up if we want to win a championship. There's no young team that's ever won a championship, mentally or physically."
The 31-year-old Kleber has been out since mid-December with a right hamstring tear but is trending toward playing Tuesday. He may be on a minutes restriction if he takes the floor. His numbers aren't great – 6.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in an average of 25.6 minutes – but he's a floor-spacing big who hits 36.9% from deep and a very solid defender.
Dallas ranks just 22nd in defensive rating in 2022-23 after ranking seventh last season. Mavericks foes are averaging 60.4 points in the paint against them over their last 10 games, second-worst in the league. The departure of Dorian Finney-Smith in the Irving trade has thinned out the Dallas in the frontcourt. The 6-foot-10 Kleber, from Germany, signed a three-year contract extension with the Mavs this past offseason.
Indiana is one of three remaining teams Dallas has yet to face this season (Philadelphia and Charlotte are the others). The teams have split each of the last four season series. Doncic is averaging 23.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 9.0 assists in six career games against Indiana. He's set at over/under 31.5 points tonight.
