Odds revealed on where Orioles All-Star Manny Machado ends the 2018 season

The slugging third basemen may be out of Baltimore's price range when he hits the free agent market after this coming season, but will the team deal him before then? SportsLine's oddsmakers break down Machado's possible destinations.

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is just 25 years of age, but he's already a three-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award winner and has hit 30-plus home runs three straight years.

After the 2018 season, he'll also be a free agent expected to command the biggest deal this side of Bryce Harper.

That kind of financial commitment to one player may be too much for the Orioles to handle. So the "when will Machado get traded?" rumors started in December and have only heated up since.

SportsLine's oddsmakers have set the odds on who has the All-Star come September:

Which team will Manny Machado be playing for at the end of 2018?

    New York Yankees 3/1
    Baltimore Orioles 3/1
    Boston Red Sox 6/1
    Chicago White Sox 6/1
    Los Angeles Dodgers 8/1
    Philadelphia Phillies 8/1
    Los Angeles Angels 8/1
    St. Louis Cardinals 10/1
    Field 5/1

FanRag Sports' John Heyman reported in December that the Cardinals, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees, Giants, Phillies and Diamondbacks all made offers to the Orioles for Machado.

Baltimore didn't pull the trigger on any of them, so Machado will, at the very least, start the season with the O's.

If the team isn't in contention by mid-June, then what? It risks losing him to free agency with nothing to show for it. A trade could at least restock the minors or get a few young standouts with remaining years of team control.

PICK: The Orioles have quite the conundrum: Do they trade away a player on the trajectory to be a superstar, or do they risk not trading him and get zero in return when he signs elsewhere after the season?

If they do deal him, is it to the highest bidder, even if that team is a division rival such as the Yankees or Red Sox?

I think by mid-June, the Orioles will be losing ground to New York and Boston, and they will send him off. But I don't think it will be to join a different AL East squad.

Instead, I look at another "all-in" team that might need a third basemen for the stretch run. A team like the L.A. Angels.

The Angels head into the season with Zack Cozart at third and Andrelton Simmons at short, not glaring weaknesses but with room to upgrade. Imagine adding Machado to a lineup with Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani.

They're going for it, and putting Machado might put them over the top in an ultra-competitive American League. Take the Angels.
