NFL rookies Justin Jefferson (Vikings) and Ke'Shawn Vaughn (Bucs) placed on COVID-19 list
Earlier Monday, we looked at the chances of Minnesota Vikings first-round receiver Justin Jefferson winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. He is +2000 on those moneyline odds at William Hill sportsbook. Well, Jefferson has to take the field first and it's not yet clear when that will happen after the Vikings placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday ahead of veterans reporting to training camps around the league Tuesday. Bucs third-round running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn also landed on that list. They were the two most notable rookies so far.
Players are placed on that list either from a positive test or for being in close contact with someone who tested positive. Teams are not permitted to say whether a player is in quarantine or has tested positive. Rookies reported to training camp last week and had to undergo immediate testing.
Jefferson, projected as a Day 1 starter, was one of four Vikings rookies placed on the list, joining offensive linemen Blake Brandel and Tyler Higby, and safety Brian Cole II. Earlier Monday, the Vikings announced that Eric Sugarman, the head trainer, vice president of sports medicine and team's infection control officer had tested positive for the virus but that none of those four rookies had been in any contact with him.
Vaughn is projected as the Bucs' No. 2 running back (maybe 1A) behind Ronald Jones. Vaughn had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons at Vanderbilt, and over the past two seasons he led the SEC with an average of 4.4 yards per rush after contact (minimum of 100 rushes). Vaughn is +2200 at William Hill to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.Â
