NFL odds: With Jameis Winston to Saints, Cam Newton's market continues to shrink
One former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who went No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft has found a home as former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Jameis Winston is signing a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints to back up Drew Brees. Just like we wrote made perfect sense at the start of this month. So that's one fewer landing spot for former Carolina Panther Cam Newton – although the Saints never showed any interest in him.
Teams that took a quarterback high in the 2020 NFL Draft surely likely wouldn't have any interest in Newton at this point. Those would include the Cincinnati Bengals (Joe Burrow), Miami Dolphins (Tua Tagovailoa) and Los Angeles Chargers (Justin Herbert).
The Bengals were never going to sign Newton as they still have Andy Dalton on their roster. More on him in a second. The Dolphins and Chargers both were rumored landing spots but both have veteran bridge quarterbacks already on the roster in Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tyrod Taylor, respectively.
Keep in mind there might be no offseason activities in the NFL this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so teams probably would prefer to keep their own veteran signal-callers who know the offense already over signing Newton.
Then there's the Dalton factor. Cincinnati is going to release him sooner or later. And while Dalton doesn't have the ceiling of Newton, he also doesn't come with injury questions. In addition, Dalton already has shown he's willing to be a good solider and work as a No. 2. Newton may not have the ego for that. Teams can't examine Newton, either, due to the pandemic.
SportsLine oddsmakers list four options for Newton, with two clear favorites: the Patriots and Jaguars. New England didn't take a single QB in the draft but did sign two undrafted QBs in Michigan State's Brian Lewerke and Louisiana Tech's J'Mar Smith. The only veterans on the roster remain unproven Jarrett Stidham and past-his-prime Brian Hoyer. There are rumors that Bill Belichick likes Dalton.
Jacksonville is ready to roll with Gardner Minshew II as its starter. His current backup is Joshua Dobbs, and the team took Oregon State's Jake Luton in the sixth round of the draft.
Denver has young Drew Lock as the starter and his backups are Jeff Driskel and Brett Rypien. Lot to be desired there. Pittsburgh will get back Ben Roethlisberger from injury, and neither of his backups, Mason Rudolph or Devlin Hodges, proved to be an answer last year when Big Ben was hurt.
The Cardinals don't have a quality backup for Kyler Murray (Brett Hundley) and ditto Seattle for Russell Wilson (literally no one right now) The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported over the weekend that Newton is unlikely to be signed by any team until/if a starter gets injured. With no workouts, that's obviously not likely.
