Next NFL coach fired odds: Ron Rivera, Matt Eberflus, Matt LaFleur favored as next to go after Josh McDaniels canned by Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Josh McDaniels.

With the Las Vegas Raiders looking terrible again on Monday in a loss in Detroit to fall to 3-5, we had planned to post odds on the first NFL head coach fired this season on Wednesday with Las Vegas' Josh McDaniels the favorite. Raiders owner Mark Davis beat us to the punch, firing McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler early Wednesday morning. Which NFL head coach will be the next to be dismissed? SportsLine offers odds.

McDaniels and Ziegler, both hired in January 2022, took over a 10-7 team that made an unexpected run to the playoffs during the 2021 season but things have only gone backward since. One has to think McDaniels' head coaching career is over after not making it to Year 2 in either stop. He had a 9-16 record with Las Vegas and went 11-17 with Denver.

McDaniels has had some truly horrific losses with the Raiders, including losing to an undrafted Division II rookie quarterback making his first start in Chicago's Tyson Bagent; losing to a high school coach in his first NFL head coaching game (Jeff Saturday and the Colts in 2022); blowing the biggest lead in franchise history (20 points against Arizona in Week 2 last year); and the offense failing to even cross the 50-yard line in a shutout (vs. New Orleans in Week 8 last year).

Remember, McDaniels made his name as an offensive coordinator with the Patriots, but Las Vegas ranks No. 31 in yards per game (268.3), No. 32 in rushing yards per game (70.0) and No. 30 in points scored per game (15.8). Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been a disaster. So it's hard to argue agains Davis making a change – clearly, he didn't want to wait until the Week 13 bye, although it's curious that if Davis was planning to reboot that the Raiders didn't sell off any pieces ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline -- which could show exactly how little he trusted Ziegler to make those moves.

Linebackers coach Antonio Pierce will take over on an interim basis and will be the 12th different person to coach a game for the Raiders over the last 20 seasons, including interims, the most of any franchise over that span. The Raiders are currently -1.5 Sunday at home vs. the Giants.

One team that did appear to waive the white flag on the season before Tuesday's trade deadline was Washington, which shipped out two excellent pass-rushers in Montez Sweat (to the Bears) and Chase Young (49ers) for 2024 draft picks with both about to enter free agency. Ron Rivera won two Coach of the Year Awards with Carolina but is now 25-32-1 with the Commanders. The team was sold over the summer and new owners tend to like to hire their own coaches and general managers.

Chicago is last in the NFC North at 2-6 and it frankly would be a stunner if Matt Eberflus is back in 2024, but he's not favored on this prop because the franchise has never fired a coach midseason and the team already had its bye week. The Bears had yet another embarrassing episode this week as running backs coach David Walker was fired over his behavior in the workplace. Earlier this season, defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned under unusual circumstances with the team's human resources department involved, as it was with Walker.

The Chargers' Brandon Staley might have been the first coach fired if his inconsistent but star-laden team hadn't beaten the visiting Bears on Sunday night. Matt LaFleur is 49-24 with Green Bay, but the franchise has taken about five steps back this year after losing Aaron Rodgers. Funny how a head coach suddenly looks mortal after losing a future Hall of Fame quarterback -- ask Bill Belichick about that (he might not be back in 2024, but it would be his choice). The Packers also were sellers at the deadline, shipping out cornerback Rasul Douglas to Buffalo.
