Monday Night Football picks: Who covers the spread, plus my favorite prop picks for 49ers vs. Rams

NFL insider Jason La Canfora breaks down the final game of Week 4 as the 49ers host the Rams for an NFC West rivalry game

Are you ready for the Coaching Tree Bowl?

    Kyle Shanahan vs. Sean McVay.

The offensive coaches who spawned an ever-growing web -- seemingly every other coach hired in the last three years -- clash once more. Technically Shanahan could claim McVay, as the Rams coach was an assistant for Shanahan when he was the offensive coordinator in Washington (back when that team still had a slur for a nickname). But they aren't carbon copies.

For years, Shanahan got the better of McVay in the regular season, then McVay beat him in the playoffs last season, en route to a Super Bowl. Neither of these teams this year have looked quite like the groups that worked their way through the NFC postseason field, and I certainly have some questions with each. Is the Rams offensive line as good as it was, and is left tackle an issue? Can the 49ers function at all on offense without their left tackle, Trent Williams, given that this offense was barely functional with him? Did Jimmy Garoppolo work off the rust at practice this week?

I don't love this matchup, overall. I lean into the total more than anything else, but here is what I am keeping an eye on.

    Rams at 49ers

    Spread: Rams +1.5

Matthew Stafford has been very good on Monday night in his career. The 49ers had no answers for Cooper Kupp last year -- he went Over 100 yards receiving in all three games, the first time that has ever happened. In what I consider to be a toss-up, I'll take the points.

    Game Total: Under 42

The San Francisco defense is legit. This is a familiar opponent for them. Five of the six games these two teams have played this season have gone Under. It's hard to see where big plays are coming from with this 49ers outfit right now. The tried and true outside zone rushing attack hasn't been special this season. Deebo Samuel hasn't showed up like in years past -- though he was a monster against the Rams last year -- and San Francisco seems to be having an identity crisis on that side of the ball overall. Maybe this is the week the Niners start to get it sorted, but I'm not betting on it. San Francisco games have all been 34 or lower thus far.

    Player Props

Matthew Stafford to throw an interception (-117)

Stafford throws a ton of picks. It's kind of baked into his cake. Against an opponent that knows him so well, I'll lean into the likelihood. His protection hasn't been as stout. He threw four in two regular season games against the 49ers last year.

Jimmy Garoppolo to throw an interception (-117)

I'm old enough to remember Garopppolo throwing a pick against the Rams that pretty much cemented the end of the 49ers season. He tossed two in two games against the Rams last year and got away with a few more. Nothing seems particularly on schedule with this offense this far, and if they don't have a running game, I see some mistakes ahead.
